A Look Back on a Year of Community Connections

Dear Neighbor,  I hope you had a joyous holiday season surrounded by friends and family.   With the new year rapidly approaching, I have been taking time to look back and reflect on my first year in the State Senate. In only 12 months, we were able to make significant...

The conversations I have out on doors are what drives my work in Lansing. From hearing about the need to fix our roads to concerns about health care access — you and your priorities set my agenda.

While we’ve knocked 27,000+ doors over the past few months, we unfortunately cannot get to all of them. So if we haven’t had a chance to connect, please reach out to our office and let me know what’s important to you ➡️ SenatorKevinHertel.com.

Recently, House Speaker Matt Hall claimed STARBASE is a “phantom program” and nothing more than “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the state budget. Now, House Republicans are patting themselves on the back for gutting its funding.

If they spent less time talking in front of cameras and more time listening to the people of Michigan, they’d know that STARBASE isn’t just an existent program — it’s a thriving one. How they see a program that prepares thousands of children for the jobs of tomorrow as “waste” I have no idea. The audacity they have to slash its funding is despicable. Our kids deserve better.

As our team fields calls of concern from parents and teachers about this proposed cut — know that I’m committed to ensuring we’re taking full advantage of the federal dollars available to keep our STARBASE programs fully operational and serving our youngest learners.
