This executive order from President Trump poses an existential threat to our public education system and our state finances. Federal funding accounts for over a billion dollars in direct aid to Michigan schools, and that funding supports critical programs for at-risk students in our state.
This order is also unconstitutional, as legal experts across the political spectrum agree that Congress would have to act to shut down any department.
It's extremely irresponsible for President Trump and Elon Musk to unleash this instability on our students and educators nationwide. Schools should be provided with a long-term, dependable policy roadmap for them to plan around and the funding they need to support our kids.
As Chair of the Senate PreK-12 Appropriations Subcommittee, I pledge to do whatever I can to fight back and bring stability to our education system during these uncertain times. ... See MoreSee Less

Existential threat? Wow, Darrin, we're all going to die because the Department of Education is going to be shut down and power and money given back to the states? You'd better rethink this.
Thanks Darrin! Keep fighting the good fight! Our children deserve the best we can give them!
Thank you sir for your efforts on behalf of public schools; they are a priceless resource in our communities all across the nation. Thank you also for representing the Maltese community!

I’m working every day to protect our students and public educators from budget cuts at the state and federal level.👀ICYMI: Yesterday, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee heard from stakeholders on the funding needs for PreK-12 education in our state for the upcoming state budget. The House Republicans have passed their budget which slashes about $5 billion from Michigan schools.
Senator Darrin Camilleri: "When you issue out the statement of a budget, it is a statement of your priorities... Our students who are living in poverty and our students who live in disadvantaged situations should not be a budget negotiation, and I would hope that Republicans and Democrats should agree with that." ... You're working everyday to better yourself not our students. How many years and billions of dollars and you have failed. In recent years, Michigan's education system has faced challenges, with the state ranking relatively low nationally, notably in areas like 4th-grade reading and overall student achievement. Here's a more detailed look: Overall Ranking: Michigan has been consistently ranked in the bottom half of states for education, with some reports placing it as low as 41st out of 50.
Don’t get discouraged. Keep working to improve the lives of America’s children! Education funding is critical to everyone’s future.
Please consider advocating for school counselor positions. Many times counselors are given inappropriate duties which takes away time from working directly with students. The budget to mental health in schools was already cut I believe.
