Disconnect all electrical equipment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Do not walk through moving water. Six inches of water can cause you to lose control and two feet of water can sweep away your car. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has created a few tips to help avoid these scams:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Get everything in writing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Never pay in cash.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Never pay in full upfront.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Never respond to an unexpected phone call that demands payment or threatens to turn off your utilities after a storm-related outage.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>Anyone who believes they\u2019ve been victimized by a scam can contact the Attorney General\u2019s office by phone from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at (517) 335-7599 or toll-free at (877) 765-8388. It was an honor to speak directly to my constituents, along with Rep. Donavan McKinney. We were so pleased by the great turnout of dedicated constituents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>During these few hours, we were able to discuss pertinent issues that matter to the communities in District 10. I am so excited to relay those concerns to my colleagues in the Senate as we continue to bring forth people-focused policies during this fall session!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>Back to School Safety Tips\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Ensuring that our students are safe while they are learning in school is a priority of mine. During the first days of school, please review these safety tips about getting to and from school carefully with your child:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Use public sidewalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing the traffic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Always look both ways before crossing the street and avoid entering the street from between objects like parked cars or shrubbery.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Teach children to recognize and obey traffic signals, signs, and pavement markings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Walk with friends whenever possible as there is safety in numbers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Avoid distractions while walking, such as texting or talking on the phone, and never use headphones.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Wear a properly fitted helmet when riding a bike and follow the rules of the road, including riding single file on the right side and using hand signals.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Arrive early at the bus stop and line up at a safe distance from the curb.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>When riding the school bus, wait for it to come to a complete stop before boarding or getting off, and avoid distracting the driver.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>As drivers, avoid texting or changing music while driving, and plan to arrive at school early to ensure safe and defensive driving.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Slow down for school zones and be aware of students crossing the street.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>If you have a level two driver&#8217;s license in Michigan, be aware of the restrictions on the number of passengers under the age of 21 allowed in the car.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>For more information, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mde\/services\/health-safety\/topics\/school-safety\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mde\/services\/health-safety\/topics\/school-safety\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b>UIA Offers New Coaching Sessions for First-Time Filers\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Workers in Michigan applying for jobless benefits now can receive online guidance from trained instructors at the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency (UIA). These coaching sessions can be accessed through the UIA website. It&#8217;s important to note that participating in an orientation session is not mandatory to qualify for benefits.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During these sessions, UIA staff will provide guidance on their new online <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/leo\/bureaus-agencies\/uia\/tools\/claimant-roadmap?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/leo\/bureaus-agencies\/uia\/tools\/claimant-roadmap?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery\">Claimant Roadmap<\/a>, a user-friendly tool designed to simplify the application process and enhance understanding of benefits. Gretchen Whitmer proclaimed August 26 as Women&#8217;s Equality Day \u2014 commemorating the 103rd anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, that granted women the right to vote. Since then, various legislative action, such as the 1965 Voting Rights Act, have also been adopted to ensure all women can use their voice at the ballot box and in their daily lives. However, the fight for gender equality is far from over.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span>For the first time in a long while, the Michigan Senate sees more women than ever in top leadership positions. That is why Michigan Department of Treasury\u2019s MI Student Aid Team is asking students and their families to be alert and informed when considering student loans. Interested residents and community leaders can attend the event at Eastern Market, Shed 5, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. Presentations are scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and attendees can view displays and ask questions to MDOT staff and consultants.
