Senate Energy and Environment Committee hears testimony on\u00a0<\/span>innovative\u00a0<\/span>plan\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span> help lower utility costs and reduce carbon emissions for homes and businesses<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

LANSING, Mich. (<\/span>June<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>2<\/span>2, 2023)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0Today,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the Michigan<\/span>\u00a0Senate\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Energy and Environment Committee began discussion of the Clean Energy Future Plan<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a bill package to help support Michigan\u2019s ongoing efforts to become a more environmentally sustainable state as climate patterns continue to change.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The bills are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sponsor<\/span>ed by Senate Majority Floor Leader\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sam Singh<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D<\/span>–<\/span>East Lansing) and Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sue Shink<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>(D<\/span>–<\/span>Northfield Twp.)<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Michigan is home to<\/span>\u00a0one<\/span>–<\/span>fifth of the world\u2019s fresh\u00a0<\/span>water<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has a responsibility to protect and\u00a0<\/span>maintain<\/span>\u00a0the resources that will continue to become as sparse as they are critical as the impacts of climate change impact the landscape of the country<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We\u00a0<\/span>should be leading the nation in implementing proactive clean energy policies<\/span>,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>Singh<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. \u201c<\/span>W<\/span>ith these bills and today\u2019s hearing, w<\/span>e are\u00a0<\/span>another step closer\u00a0<\/span>to tak<\/span>ing the<\/span>\u00a0bold\u00a0<\/span>and necessary\u00a0<\/span>action to protect our environment\u00a0<\/span>for generations to come<\/span>, all while creating good<\/span>–<\/span>paying jobs and preserving our communities.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>

At today\u2019s hearing, <\/span>a variety of interests expressed widespread support for\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>intent of the\u00a0<\/span>Clean Energy Future Plan\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to address and curb climate chang<\/span>e<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This included testimony from<\/span>\u00a0environmental groups<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>Michigan League of Conservation Voters, Michigan Environmental Council,\u00a0<\/span>Sierra Club\u00a0<\/span>Michigan Chapter, and Natural Resource Defense Council<\/span>),\u00a0<\/span>economic interests\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council,\u00a0<\/span>Coalition for Community Solar Access, and\u00a0<\/span>Great Lakes Renewable Energy\u00a0<\/span>Association<\/span>),\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0health advocates<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>Michigan Clinicians for Climate Action and Asthma & Allergy Foundation of America<\/span>–<\/span>Michigan Chapter<\/span>)<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a moment like never before here in Michigan to invest in our people, protect our air and water, create clean energy jobs and join the fight to tackle climate change,\u201d said <\/span><\/span><\/span>Government Affairs Director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. \u201cClean air, reliable energy, creating good<\/span>–<\/span>paying jobs and\u00a0<\/span>an equitable<\/span>\u00a0future right here in Michigan\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0those are kitchen table issues. Michiganders across the state are demanding action on climate change. We stand with lawmakers in moving Michigan toward 100% clean energy.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

By addressing key financial and accessibility issues with transitioning to renewable energy sources, the Clean Energy Future Plan allows more homes and businesses across the state to improve their energy usage. This plan includes:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
