LANSING, Mich. (April 20, 2023) \u2014 Today, Michigan Senate Majority Floor Leader\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sam Singh<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-East Lansing) and Rep<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Phil Skaggs<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>(D-East Grand Rapids) introduced legislation to help improve the oral health of all Michigan students<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Senate Bill\u00a0<\/span><\/span>280<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>House\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bill\u00a0<\/span><\/span>4<\/span>445<\/span><\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The bills will ensure that healthy children will have more classroom time b<\/span>y\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mak<\/span>ing the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>state<\/span>\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>oral health assessments<\/span>\u00a0program<\/span>\u00a0permanent\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and aligning the requirements for dental examinations with the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>nearly 5<\/span>0<\/span>\u00a0years of successful vision and hearing tests<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cStudents can\u2019t focus on learning and educational engagement if they\u2019re in pain,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Singh<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. \u201cProviding this critical health screening for our young people can make a huge difference in academic success.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Michigan Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 (MDHHS)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pilot program to support oral health assessments went into effect in the 2021-2022 school year. The program is set to expire at the end of this\u00a0<\/span><\/span>year unless<\/span>\u00a0this legislation is enacted.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThe Michigan Oral Health Coalition is very excited about the introduction of this important legislation,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Ellen Sugrue Hyman<\/b>, Executive Director\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the Michigan Oral Health Coalition<\/span>. \u201cFully implementing oral health assessments for kindergarteners will help address the most chronic disease for children, tooth decay, and reduce the number of school days missed due to dental pain and infection. We<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>greatly appreciat<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0the partnership with MDHHS and the legislature in moving this legislation forward.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Parents are required to submit a form to their student\u2019s school administration if they have received an oral health screening within the past six months of the first day of school.<\/span>\u00a0If the result of an oral assessment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>indicates<\/span>\u00a0that a child\u00a0<\/span><\/span>requires<\/span>\u00a0follow-up care, the dentist or dental hygienist will\u00a0<\/span><\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0information to a parent concerning the availability and sources of dental treatment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>required<\/span>\u00a0to eliminate or reduce an identified problem.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cToo often<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0children are suffering from an issue that could easily be resolved from a dental exam,\u201d said Rep.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Skaggs<\/span><\/span>. \u201cI\u2019m proud to sponsor this bill to ensure that all students are receiving proper oral healthcare.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
