Bills championed by Sen. Singh would require licensure of tobacco retailers

<\/i><\/span>LANSING, Mich. (Dec. 18, 2025) \u2014\u00a0Today,\u00a0the Michigan\u00a0Senate\u00a0passed\u00a0bipartisan\u00a0legislation\u00a0to combat youth tobacco use across the state.\u00a0Spearheaded by\u00a0Senate\u00a0Majority Floor Leader\u00a0<\/span>Sam Singh<\/b>\u00a0(D-East Lansing)\u00a0and\u00a0cosponsored by\u00a0Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Joseph Bellino<\/b>\u00a0(R-Monroe),\u00a0Senate Bills\u00a0<\/span>462<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>465<\/a><\/u><\/span> would require tobacco retailers to be licensed, like the majority of states around the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the leading cause of preventable death in Michigan and across the\u00a0nation,\u00a0tobacco use amongst our youth is a grave and growing public health concern that we must\u00a0act on immediately,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Singh<\/b>. \u201cBy establishing a clear regulatory framework to hold our retailers accountable, we can ensure our kids here in Michigan are afforded the same protections as kids in nearly every other state in the country. I\u2019m grateful to see this legislation pass the Senate today with bipartisan support, and want to extend a special appreciation to the many educators and community partners who have long been advocating for this issue at the Capitol on behalf of our young people. It\u2019s time we get this done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan is one of only\u00a0nine\u00a0states that\u00a0do\u00a0not\u00a0require the licensure of tobacco establishments, which\u00a0has\u00a0been proven to be an effective tobacco control measure.\u00a0To tackle this public health crisis head-on, this legislation would\u00a0create stronger enforcement and accountability measures for tobacco retailers through a statewide regulatory system.\u00a0In addition to\u00a0the licensure\u00a0requirement,\u00a0key components\u00a0of the bill package include:\u00a0<\/div>\n
