Sam Singh Everyone deserves access to affordable, quality health care, no matter their income level or what zip code they call home. To ensure those in our rural areas \u2014 including our district\u2019s own Shiawassee County \u2014 can get the care they need, I\u2019ve sponsored legislation to:<\/p>\n Bolster Resources for Rural Health Care Facilities Signed into law last year, my legislation expanded the definition of which hospitals can qualify for funds distributed to the rural hospital access pool. These technical changes enabled 71 locations in three additional counties \u2014 Livingston, Muskegon, and Saginaw \u2014 to now qualify as sites. The City of Owosso in Shiawassee County, an already eligible county, also qualifies under the new definition, allowing Memorial Healthcare \u2014 the only hospital in Shiawassee County \u2014 to be eligible for these funds. By encouraging the use of Michigan-grown feedstocks for sustainable aviation fuel, such as corn and soybeans, this legislation is poised to open new markets for farmers, helping revitalize rural economies and reinforcing the connection between agriculture and the future of energy innovation.<\/p>\n Boosts Opportunities for Local Producers We are working to support Michigan-based maple syrup and honey producers by ensuring they fall under the same annual sales cap as all other foods in the cottage food law, leveling the playing field and ensuring any future cottage increases to the food law\u2019s sales cap would also include these producers. Unanimously passed on the Senate floor in April, this bipartisan legislation would break down a critical barrier for these producers by allowing them to grow their business beyond what has so far been possible.<\/p>\n Preserves Farmland for Future Generations As part of our Clean Energy Future plan, we secured changes that allow farmers to temporarily rent their land for solar operations, providing them an additional source of income while enabling them to maintain their agricultural lands for future use.<\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_image src=”https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2025\/09\/Screenshot-2025-09-10-140601.png” _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” title_text=”Screenshot 2025-09-10 140601″ force_fullwidth=”on” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_column _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” type=”4_4″ theme_builder_area=”post_content”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.27.3″ _module_preset=”default” theme_builder_area=”post_content” hover_enabled=”0″ sticky_enabled=”0″] As Chair of the Senate Oversight Committee, building trust and transparency in our governmental institutions is one of my top priorities. This year, my Senate colleagues and I have worked to uphold the principles of good governance and safeguard Michigan consumers with legislation that:<\/p>\n Reins in Pharmaceutical Companies Senate Democrats passed legislation to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) in Michigan \u2014 an independent body able to analyze and recommend ways to lower drug costs in the state. This includes setting upper payment limits \u2014 maximum amounts that can be charged for prescription drugs.<\/p>\n Promotes Hospital & Drug Transparency Earlier this year, the Senate passed my bipartisan legislation to safeguard the federal 340B program, increasing accountability for pharmaceutical companies and protecting access to the health care services and low-cost prescription drugs that Michiganders who are uninsured, older, or have lower incomes rely on.<\/p>\n
