This will ensure hospitals, Federally Qualified Health Centers and other community health providers are able to provide affordable prescription drugs for our seniors and low-income patients most in need. Additionally, as part of the bill package, Senate Bill 95, sponsored by Sen. Lindsey, boosts transparency in the health care system, enabling patients to have their debt cleared by a hospital if they were found in violation of federal price transparency laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Protecting Michigan Consumers \u2014 Senate Bill <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0134\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">134<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last week, I introduced Senate Bill 134, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/2025\/03\/07\/during-consumer-protection-week-sen-singh-continues-work-to-protect-michigan-consumers\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">bolsters protections for Michigan consumers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by restoring power to the Michigan Consumer Protection Act. Currently, the act condones deceptive, fraudulent activity of individuals and businesses so long as they act within a profession that is government-regulated. This legislation would remove those exemptions as well as equip the Michigan Dept. of Attorney General with the authority to investigate, ensuring bad actors and harmful business practices can be held accountable under state law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Enhancing Transparency Through Financial Disclosure \u2014 Senate Bill <\/span><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0101\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">101<\/span><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last month, I introduced Senate Bill 101, which aims to enhance transparency in Michigan\u2019s lobbying practices. The bill amends the current lobby registrations laws regulating the definitions and reporting requirements related to lobbyists and gifts. Senate Bill 101 is part of a legislative package including Senate Bills 99 and 100 introduced by Sens. While it was quickly challenged by a federal judge and recently blocked indefinitely, the chaos and uncertainty across Michigan and nationwide left nonprofits and numerous other organizations scrambling to figure out how to continue to provide essential services that Michiganders rely on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I believe it&#8217;s critical that we give voice to the people and organizations in our communities impacted by these types of thoughtless decisions. Last week on March 5, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/2025\/03\/06\/federal-funding-freeze-2\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Oversight Committee took testimony from leader<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s of early childhood education programs, health and nutrition experts, disability advocates, and various other nonprofits about the disruptions to the services they provide to our communities across the state. Michiganders deserve to feel secure in our ability to ensure that our communities have the resources they need to thrive, and it\u2019s imperative that we listen to the people in our districts that are being impacted by ineffective and chaotic governance. You can watch the hearing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MichiganSenateDemocrats\/videos\/1707054653550469\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Celebrating Free School Meals for Michigan Students<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the last two state budgets we passed, my colleagues and I were able to secure funding to provide free breakfast and lunch for all public school students, saving Michigan families approximately $850 a year on food costs, and keeping kids fed and focused in the classroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As one of only eight states that offers a statewide free meal program for all public school students, the Michigan Dept. of Education recognized last week, March 3-7, as National School Breakfast Week, an opportunity to highlight this widely popular and successful program. Since the start of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mde\/services\/food\/michigan-school-meals\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan School Meals<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in the 2023-24 school year, 31% more students are eating breakfast at school and 25% more are eating lunch there as well. And the program doesn\u2019t just benefit students and their families but also provides a boost to local farmers and food producers. I\u2019m glad to see Gov.
