(March 7, 2025) \u2014 As part of National Consumer Protection Week, Senate Majority Floor Leader <b>Sam Singh<\/b> (D-East Lansing) introduced <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0134\" id=\"OWA66e0a776-02a0-84c5-bd54-0c8aa5f304d3\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW52949762 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0134\" data-outlook-id=\"cbf13d69-9b8d-4274-9ec7-f4dd2a8b4f9f\">Senate Bill 134<\/a><\/u><\/span> this week to bolster protections for Michigan consumers by restoring power to the Michigan Consumer Protection Act.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">The once-powerful act \u2014 gutted following a 1999 Michigan Supreme Court ruling \u2014 currently condones deceptive, fraudulent activity of individuals and businesses so long as they act within a profession that is government-regulated. Sen. <b>Singh\u2019s<\/b> legislation would remove those exemptions as well as equip the Michigan Dept. of Attorney General with the authority to investigate, ensuring bad actors and harmful business practices can be held accountable under state law.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u201cIt&#8217;s unacceptable that Michigan has the worst consumer protection laws in the country, leaving consumers ill-protected against bad actors who seek to take advantage of them as they go about their day-to-day business,\u201d said Sen. <b>Singh<\/b>. \u201cThis legislation adds teeth to our Consumer Protection Act, restoring power to the Attorney General&#8217;s Office to safeguard Michigan consumers \u2014 particularly our vulnerable and elderly adults \u2014 from deceitful and harmful activities.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">In addition to restoring strong consumer protection efforts to the state Attorney General\u2019s office, Senate Bill 134 would also create a new fund to support enforcement and education efforts to assist residents and reduce scams. And, following consumer protection best practices, this legislation would create increased penalties for violations against elderly and vulnerable adults.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u201cState law enforcement has been at the front lines of stopping fraud and abuse that picks the pockets of families trying to get by,\u201d said\u00a0<b>Rohit Chopra<\/b>, former Director of the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. \u201cMichigan needs strong laws to protect consumers, especially at a time when federal law enforcement agencies face mass firings and less capacity to investigate crime.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">This legislation is a response to the Michigan Supreme Court 1999 case decision in <i>Smith v. Globe Life Insurance Company<\/i>, which weakened the power of the Michigan Consumer Protection Act by exempting many industries from liability, leaving residents ill-protected from scams and other deceptive activity.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"black\">The bill introduced yesterday continues <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/2024\/12\/05\/senate-passes-singh-bill-to-provide-greater-protection-for-michigan-consumers\/\" id=\"OWAc1ca0275-5903-bd53-7d0b-e1bcee378306\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW52949762 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/2024\/12\/05\/senate-passes-singh-bill-to-provide-greater-protection-for-michigan-consumers\/\" data-outlook-id=\"7a3f4c81-412d-4463-a511-4258b3a0d0ea\">Sen.
