Neighbors not only care for each other, but are also thoughtful stewards of the forests, fields, and waters by which they are surrounded. From the scenic shores of Copper Harbor to the hardworking farm towns of southern Michigan, there is much to cherish and respect about our state\u2019s rural areas.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whether by restoring our game species and hunting traditions or boosting resources for our local farmers and food producers, Senate Democrats have been working hard to get things done for rural Michiganders.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Protecting Michigan\u2019s Outdoors &amp; Preserving the Traditions that Come with It<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As much as there is to appreciate about Michigan&#8217;s natural spaces, there is just as much to preserve and protect. Surrounded by abundant woods, waters and wildlife, many folks in our rural communities hold a deep appreciation for nature and a connection to the hunting traditions that Michigan\u2019s great outdoors make possible.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/cherry\/2024\/10\/02\/pheasant-hunting\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bipartisan legislation passed this fall<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by Sen. John Cherry (D-Flint) would help preserve these long-held traditions in our remote areas, specifically for pheasants and the American Woodcock. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-SB-0803\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 803<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would maintain huntable numbers of pheasants in game areas by adding a five-year extension to the state pheasant license program. Set to expire in January 2026, this program releases birds into designated hunting areas on state land through funds raised from pheasant hunting license sales. Under <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-SB-0860\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 860<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, the Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) would collaborate with stakeholders to set population goals and assess habitat needs to recover the American Woodcock, which has experienced a 50-year decline in Michigan.<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Sen.-Cherry-and-Nat.-Resources-and-Ag-Committee.jpg&#8221; alt=&#8221;Sen. Cherry.\u00a0 \u201cBy extending the successful pheasant license program and ensuring Michigan remains a key nesting state for the American Woodcock, this legislation will enable more of our residents to get outdoors and enjoy hunting \u2014 something many across our state cherish deeply.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond hunting, Michigan&#8217;s outdoor spaces offer ample opportunities for residents to explore, unwind, and have some fun. Signed into law earlier this fall, another bill introduced by Sen. Cherry, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-SB-0817\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 817<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, will make exciting improvements to outdoor recreational opportunities throughout our state thanks to the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. Funding approved with this legislation will support 18 land acquisition projects and 35 development projects, a large part of which will enhance the accessibility of our park facilities, trails, and access to waterways so that people of all abilities can enjoy kayaking, fishing, and all other activities Michigan\u2019s outdoors has to offer. Paired with funding passed in the 2025 state budget for the Michigan Dept. of Agriculture and Rural Development and DNR, these investments underscore Senate Democrats\u2019 commitment to safeguarding Michigan\u2019s natural resources, ensuring present and future Michiganders can enjoy our state\u2019s rich natural heritage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ensuring Rural Communities Get the Care They Need, When They Need It<br \/><\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recognizing that all Michiganders, regardless of their zip code, deserve access to quality care when they need it, Senate Democrats have passed critical health care supports for rural Michiganders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To address the approximately 1,000 unfilled paramedic roles that put the health of Michigan\u2019s rural communities at risk, Sen. Kevin Hertel (D-St. Clair Shores) worked alongside local firefighters to craft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2023-SB-0249\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 249<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which establishes the Michigan-Only License for paramedics, allowing them to receive accreditation through a state-administered exam instead of only having a national exam option. Signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, this legislation cuts bureaucratic red tape, reducing time and financial barriers to becoming a paramedic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;335559739&quot;:0}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/23\/2024\/10\/Hertel-Paramedics-2-2048&#215;1365-1.jpg&#8221; alt=&#8221;Sen. Sam Singh (D-East Lansing), which expands the definition of which hospitals can qualify for funds distributed to the rural hospital access pool. By making some simple technical changes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/2024\/10\/10\/rural-hospitals\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">this legislation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> will secure more equitable funding for 71 locations in three additional counties and for the only hospital in Shiawassee County \u2014 Memorial Healthcare in Owosso.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt is absolutely critical that our rural hospitals have the funding and resources they need to provide quality care to the Michiganders who rely on them,\u201d said Sen. Singh. \u201cI\u2019m proud to have championed this legislation across the finish line. Singh with Memorial Healthcare Staff&#8221; force_fullwidth=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; enable_caption_text=&#8221;on&#8221; image_caption_font=&#8221;||on||||||&#8221; image_caption_alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;]<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taking Steps to Grow Michigan\u2019s Food Economy<br \/><\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Understanding that Michigan\u2019s rural communities have strong roots in agriculture and food production, Senate Democrats have been advancing efforts to ensure everyone, from our farmers to our smaller-scale food producers, have the resources necessary to grow and lead in their sectors.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This fall marked a victory for Michigan\u2019s beekeepers and maple syrup producers specifically, when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-SB-0882\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 882<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> passed unanimously on the Senate floor. Also introduced by Sen. Singh, this legislation would <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">increase the annual sales cap for honey and maple syrup producers from $15,000 to $25,000, matching the limit under the Cottage Food Law. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Now over to the House for consideration, this bipartisan legislation will break down a critical barrier for these producers and allow them to grow their business beyond what has so far been possible \u2014 something that\u2019s not only a welcome change to them, but to Michigan\u2019s agricultural economy as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senate Democrats have enhanced Michigan\u2019s food and agriculture industry using the 2025 state budget as a tool as well, funding a new \u201cFarm to Family\u201d program which supports regenerative farming, agricultural supply chains, and brings Michigan-grown crops to dinner tables around the state. We also continued to invest in innovative and mutually beneficial programs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doubleupfoodbucks.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Double Up Food Bucks<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tencentsmichigan.org\/budget_passed_for_fy_25\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">10 Cents a Meal<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that improve food access and utilize Michigan fruits and vegetables. About $5 million is also included to help bolster Michigan\u2019s agricultural industry to address the impacts of climate change. And, resources were allocated for minority-owned food and agriculture business ventures to build their capacity, whether in expanding agricultural processing or production, developing regional food systems, or increasing access to healthy food.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As Chair of the Senate Natural Resources and Agriculture Committee, Sen. Sue Shink (D-Northfield Twp.) is also no stranger to lifting up issues that Michigan\u2019s rural communities hold near and dear. From <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/issues\/michigan-infrastructure-office\/mio-press-release\/2024\/10\/10\/michigans-rural-communities-awarded-over-42-million-to-invest-in-water-infrastructure#:~:text=LANSING%2C%20Mich.,to%20the%20state's%20rural%20communities.\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">protecting and preserving Michigan\u2019s water infrastructure<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mdard\/about\/media\/pressreleases\/2024\/10\/17\/mdard-announces-2024-specialty-crop-block-grant-recipients\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ensuring our farmers have what they need to be successful<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Sen. Shink has been working alongside other state and federal officials to ensure that every community, no matter how remote, has the resources needed to thrive.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cMichigan\u2019s farmers are the driving force behind our local and national food systems. Their dedication to growing high-quality crops strengthens our economy and nourishes our communities,\u201d said Sen.
