After four-decade fight, 373,000+ residents, including those in Washtenaw County, finally poised to receive long-awaited protection and recognition\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

LANSING, Mich. (<\/span>March\u00a0<\/span><\/span>31<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a02023) \u2014 Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sue Shink\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>(D-Northfield Twp) and the Michigan Legislature continue to make history and tackle longstanding policy needs, including passing\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Senate Bill 4<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>provide<\/span>\u00a0protection from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. Legislators have been working for more than four decades to see Michigan\u2019s civil rights law explicitly include sexual orientation and gender identity. With Gov. Gretchen Whitmer\u2019s signature, the bill officially became a public act<\/span>\u00a0on March 21, 2023<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201c<\/span>No resident in Michigan should feel they have to hide their identity to ensure job security or successfully\u00a0<\/span><\/span>purchase<\/span>\u00a0a new home. This legislation protects individuals from harmful discrimination that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has no place in our community,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Shink<\/span><\/span>. \u201cI\u2019m proud to be a part of a diverse body of legislators that understand discrimination based<\/span>\u00a0on sexual orientation, identity, or expression is an issue that need<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0to be prioritized and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>swiftly\u00a0<\/span><\/span>addressed.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>

<\/span>Nearly t<\/span>wo-thirds of LGBTQ+ Americans report having experienced discrimination in their everyday lives. Twenty-two states and more than 100 cities have adopted these common-sense,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>inclusive<\/span>\u00a0and comprehensive protections for LGBTQ+ people, and Michigan is now the 23rd state to adopt comprehensive non-discrimination laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

To celebrate this historic achievement and step towards building a more\u00a0<\/span><\/span>equitable<\/span>\u00a0Michigan,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Ann Arbor legislators will be hosting\u00a0<\/span>a happy hour at the North Star Lounge in Ann Arbor on April 4<\/b><\/span>th<\/span>\u00a0from 5<\/span>:00<\/span>\u00a0p.m. to 7<\/span>:00<\/span>\u00a0p.m. The event is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>free<\/span>\u00a0and open to the public.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
