Michigan House of Representatives <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2014 making it very clear that the Michigan Constitution requires every bill passed by the Legislature to be presented to the governor \u2014 the House continues to unlawfully withhold nine critical bills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">These bills would provide much-needed cost-saving relief to Michiganders, a need that has only grown more urgent in the wake of Donald Trump\u2019s di<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sastrous <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">trade war and the resulting stock market crash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We recognize the importance of these bills and the relief they offer. We are grateful that the Michigan Supreme Court has ordered the Court of Appeals to swiftly take up the matter. The Senate remains committed to pursuing every legal avenue available to ensure these bills get signed into law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">But the fastest way to resolve this issue and deliver real relief to people across our state is for House Republicans to stop playing political games and to fulfill their constitutional duty to deliver these bills to the governor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The lawsuit was brought by Leader Winnie Brinks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/brinks\/2025\/02\/03\/lawsuit\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">after House Speaker Matt Hall failed to present nine bills<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> that passed both chambers to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The bills \u2014 House Bills 4177, 4665-4667, and 4900-4901 of 2023 and House Bills 5817-5818 and 6058 of 2024 \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/shink\/2025\/01\/30\/stalled-legislation\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">improve retirement benefits for state corrections and conservation officers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/hertel\/2025\/01\/30\/legislation-blocked-by-house-republicans\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lower health care costs for firefighters, teachers, and other public sector employees<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A People-First Budget for Michigan<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Right now, my colleagues and I are working hard to craft Michigan&#8217;s next state budget. We believe that the budget should address the real needs of everyday Michiganders and serve the hardworking taxpayers who fund it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We know the decisions we make will shape the future of our state. This plan repealed the unfair retirement tax to help seniors save an average of $1,000 annually and provided the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">largest tax break for working families<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in state history, helping them save an average of $3,150 or about $9.75 million across Senate District 14.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Taxes are due this week on <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tuesday, April 15, 2025<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">. To learn how to take advantage of these expanded benefits and maximize your tax return<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/lowering-costs\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Holding the Trump Administration and DOGE Accountable<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Building on previous work Senate Democrats have done to expose and highlight the consequences the federal funding freeze is having on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/hertel\/2025\/03\/12\/michigan-state-police-2\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">public safety<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> as well as on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/singh\/2025\/03\/06\/federal-funding-freeze-2\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan children, seniors, and families<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, my colleagues and I came together to speak out to protect Michiganders\u2019 health care and private data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Protecting Health Care Access<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Last month, Republicans in Washington voted for a budget resolution that paves the way for massive, indiscriminate cuts to Medicaid. And as the federal Dept. of Government Efficiency (DOGE) seeks to slash enough from the federal budget to pay for a tax break for the wealthiest 1% of Americans, Medicaid is among the critical programs on the chopping block.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To protect the 2.6 million Michiganders \u2014 including children, seniors, and veterans \u2014 who rely on Medicaid for essential health care services, includ<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ing doctors visits and senior care, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">my colleagues and I joined physicians, patients, and advocates for a committee hearing and press conference where we called on the Trump administration to stop these dangerous cuts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To learn more, you can watch the committee hearing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/19LYNpNy4R\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Addressing DOGE\u2019s Access to Your Private Information<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Senate Oversight Committee recently heard testimony from IT and cybersecurity experts on the impact and potential implications of DOGE\u2019s unfettered access to Michiganders\u2019 personal, financial, and health information. In addition to addressing the various cybersecurity issues raised by the Trump administration\u2019s invasion of private data, experts also shared ways individuals can protect themselves from any repercussions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">To watch the committee hearing and learn more, click <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1BbWW1txUB\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">here<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fighting to Safeguard Michigan Public Schools<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On March 20, President Trump signed an executive order to begin dismantling the U.S. Dept. of Education \u2014 a dangerous, unconstitutional action that could result in devastating cuts to public education across the country, including funding for at-risk students, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/v\/1HiXamFmzV\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pell Grant recipients<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and other disadvantaged communities. Similarly, Michigan House Republicans recently passed their education budget, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upnorthlive.com\/news\/local\/michigan-house-oks-20b-budget-cuts-5b-school-aid-for-2025-26-lansing-republicans-democrats\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">aims to slash about <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">$5 billion<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> from our state\u2019s public schools<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for PreK-12 schools recently heard from stakeholders on state budget funding needs for public education here in Michigan, underscoring the urgent need for continued support and stability rather than disinvestment and uncertainty.
