(March 18, 2025) \u2014 Today, the Michigan Senate passed <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW218762528 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA817def98-a052-8b5c-151a-93e5f170fa57\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0081\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0081\" data-linkindex=\"1\">Senate Bill 81<\/a><\/u><\/span> with bipartisan support. This legislation, sponsored by Sen. <b>Sue Shink<\/b> (D-Northfield Twp.), will help provide young people in Michigan\u2019s justice system with access to legal representation, regardless of their financial situation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo child should face the justice system alone simply because their family can\u2019t afford an attorney,\u201d said Sen. <b>Shink<\/b>. \u201cAccess to legal counsel can be the difference between a second chance and a lifetime of consequences. This legislation closes a critical gap in our legal system and ensures that every child has a fair shot at justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The bill expands the responsibilities of the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission to include overseeing legal defense for indigent youth, in addition to adults. It also strengthens protections for young defendants by requiring legal counsel before they can waive their right to an attorney and establishing new procedures for determining indigency.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI applaud the Senate for passing legislation to provide standards for youth defense and appreciate Senator Shink\u2019s leadership to ensure children in the juvenile legal system are given meaningful access to counsel and their constitutional rights are protected,\u201d said <strong>Kristen Staley<\/strong><\/span><span>, Michigan Indigent Defense Commission Executive Director. \u201cI look forward to continuing to work with the House to implement this important change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the Senate\u2019s passage of juvenile defense legislation, we move closer to a system that upholds every child\u2019s right to fair representation,\u201d said <b>Jennifer Peacock<\/b>, Policy Director at the Michigan Center for Youth Justice. \u201cTheir rights must be protected in every courtroom across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senate Bill 81 now moves to the House for further consideration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" style=\"text-align: center;\">###<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LANSING, Mich.
