(Jan. 30, 2025) \u2014 Yesterday, Senate Democrats held a special meeting of the Senate Labor Committee to hear personal perspectives on the consequences of Republican Speaker of the House Matt Hall illegally holding nine bills passed by both chambers last session \u2014 including legislation to improve retirement options and strengthen recruitment and retention for corrections and other law enforcement officers.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Representing a large number of corrections officers who are impacted by the held legislation, Sen. <b>Sue Shink<\/b> (D-Northfield) joined as a guest committee member to hear testimony.\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cHouse Republicans are putting the safety of our corrections officers and prisoners at risk. Each day Matt Hall refuses to fulfill his constitutional duty is another day corrections officers face unnecessary dangerous short staffing levels that lead to exhaustion and dangerous conditions in the prison, conditions that could be corrected if these bills were sent to the governor for her signature,\u201d said Sen. <b>Shink<\/b>. \u201cSenate Democrats will not stand by while Hall plays political games. We were elected to serve the people, not cater to partisan obstruction. Michigan deserves action, and we\u2019re committed to delivering it no matter what.\u201d<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Included in the nine pieces of legislation are House Bills <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW109922897 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWAe1fcdbe9-1750-ae5e-1982-abf86fc087ba\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2023-HB-4665\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2023-HB-4665\" data-linkindex=\"1\">4665<\/a><\/u><\/span>&#8211;<span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW109922897 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWAa4b78fab-6315-fe33-e96e-14744ba0d090\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2023-HB-4667\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2023-HB-4667\" data-linkindex=\"2\">4667<\/a><\/u><\/span> of 2023. Together, these bipartisan bills, which are nearly identical to a <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW109922897 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWAf729e4fc-15df-65b6-a214-207e7fecd8ee\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/shink\/2024\/10\/30\/legislation-to-improve-retirement-benefits-for-corrections-conservation-officers-passes-senate\/\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/shink\/2024\/10\/30\/legislation-to-improve-retirement-benefits-for-corrections-conservation-officers-passes-senate\/\" data-linkindex=\"3\">legislative package Sen. Shink helped spearhead in the Senate<\/a><\/u><\/span>, would allow new corrections and other state law enforcement officers to become members of the Michigan State Police hybrid retirement system and allow current officers to choose to move retirement systems.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cDespite an extraordinary staffing shortage, Michigan corrections officers have gone above and beyond to keep our communities safe,\u201d said <b>Ray Sholtz<\/b>, Executive Director of the Michigan Corrections Organization. \u201cToo many short-term fixes and hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in overtime have done nothing to stem the tide of an ever-growing staffing crisis. We know the solution: We need pensions that keep officers in the profession and allow them to retire with dignity.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe appreciate Sen. Shink and the Labor Committee for hearing our testimony yesterday, though we regret that we must advocate once again for what should already be settled law. Our officers have done their part to get this legislation to the governor\u2019s desk. It is past time for politicians to stop playing games and do theirs.\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Over 6,000 members of the Michigan Corrections Organization are currently impacted by the House Republicans\u2019 unconstitutional decision to block the bills from being sent to the governor\u2019s desk for signature.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><b>Cary Johnson<\/b>, a corrections officer at the Cotton Correctional Facility and one of Sen. <b>Shink<\/b>\u2019s constituents, also provided testimony during the hearing.<\/div>\n<div aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u201cI&#8217;m considered a long-term officer, and I&#8217;ve seen a lot in my time working for the Michigan Dept. of Corrections,\u201d said <b>Johnson<\/b>. \u201cI have seen the days when we were fully staffed, and officers were able to go home to their families and have a good work-life balance&#8230; those days are long and gone.
