(Jan. 8, 2025) \u2014 To kick off the first day of the 103rd Legislature, Michigan Senate Democrats, led by Sens. <b>Darrin Camilleri<\/b> (D-Trenton), <b>Veronica Klinefelt<\/b> (D-Eastpointe), and <b>Sue Shink <\/b>(D-Northfield Twp.), hit the ground running and introduced legislation to protect the health and financial stability of residents. To achieve this, Senate Bills 3-5 would establish a Prescription Drug Affordability Board in Michigan (PDAB) \u2014 an independent body designed to lower prescription drug costs and hold Big Pharma accountable. This legislation comes at a critical moment: while the pharmaceutical industry raked in over <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(70, 120, 134)\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.protectourcare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/GREEDWATCH_2024_Q1_Summary.pdf\" id=\"OWA48ab0cf0-307d-976e-7597-bb4d374906d8\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW93852471 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(70, 120, 134)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.protectourcare.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/GREEDWATCH_2024_Q1_Summary.pdf\" data-outlook-id=\"0e6390b2-7144-4538-b6cd-da768546e226\">$29 billion in net profits<\/a><\/u><\/span> during a recent three-month period, <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(70, 120, 134)\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/Whitmer\/Documents\/Misc\/RX_FINAL.pdf?rev=fe55e9b792574ada86c342374d7abdd0\" id=\"OWA9be7adf2-5c05-9a14-88f8-a8b732f353f2\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW93852471 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(70, 120, 134)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/Whitmer\/Documents\/Misc\/RX_FINAL.pdf?rev=fe55e9b792574ada86c342374d7abdd0\" data-outlook-id=\"83212ef9-256c-42eb-9415-4d6a7c24ee41\">nearly a third of Michigan residents<\/a><\/u><\/span> stopped taking their prescriptions because of cost and <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(70, 120, 134)\"><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/research\/surveys_statistics\/health\/2022\/michigan-prescription-drug-prices-legislation-policies-report.doi.10.26419-2Fres.00571.001.pdf\" id=\"OWA7edfdd28-9dc0-708d-317e-5dbe46022598\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW93852471 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(70, 120, 134)\" title=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/research\/surveys_statistics\/health\/2022\/michigan-prescription-drug-prices-legislation-policies-report.doi.10.26419-2Fres.00571.001.pdf\" data-outlook-id=\"70c754e5-4ff3-45ae-8776-8f7fbaebe2e4\">60% of older adults<\/a><\/u><\/span> reported concerns over not being able to afford their essential medications.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cI\u2019ve heard countless stories from constituents and residents across Michigan about the devastating impact of skyrocketing prescription drug costs. This growing crisis has, in too many cases, resulted in tragic loss of life,\u201d said Sen. <b>Camilleri<\/b>. \u201cWhile pharmaceutical companies post record profits, hardworking Michiganders are forced to forego or ration medication in order to be able to cover their rent or afford groceries. I will not stand by while Big Pharma prioritizes greed over people\u2019s lives. Our residents deserve access to life-saving medications, and a Prescription Drug Affordability Board will help make that a reality.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">The PDAB would be able to analyze and recommend ways to lower drug costs in Michigan. This includes setting upper payment limits \u2014 maximum amounts that can be charged for prescription drugs\u00a0\u2014 on prescription drugs sold in the state. By establishing these limits on the most expensive medications, the board can help find cost-saving options. A PDAB will also allow Michiganders to save money without giving up necessary medications.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cMichiganders shouldn\u2019t have to choose between affording critical medications or paying for rent and groceries,\u201d said Sen. <b>Klinefelt<\/b>. \u201cIt\u2019s time to rein in these out-of-control costs for residents and ensure they can access the medications they need when they need them \u2014 and that\u2019s exactly what the Prescription Drug Affordability Board will accomplish.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">The board would consist of experienced professionals in economics, health care, supply chain management, and academia, with no connections to the pharmaceutical industry. This group of impartial experts will provide essential oversight and transparency for the prescription drug industry. Plus, the public would be able to weigh in and give feedback to ensure the board&#8217;s work addresses the needs and concerns of Michigan residents.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cEveryone should be able to afford the prescription drugs they need to stay healthy,\u201d said Sen. <b>Shink<\/b>. \u201cToo many people are forced to make the impossible choice between life-saving medications or meeting basic needs like food and housing.
