After months of negotiations led by Sen. <b>Dayna Polehanki <\/b>(D-Livonia), <span data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\"><u><a data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW160660944 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA387483ff-3595-6376-7919-4487c3d953cc\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/polehanki\/2026\/01\/14\/cell-phones\/\" data-ogsc=\"rgb(5, 99, 193)\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/polehanki\/2026\/01\/14\/cell-phones\/\" data-outlook-id=\"4412ce4d-638c-499e-bddf-e35f5ed3bcf9\">lawmakers\u00a0struck\u00a0a bipartisan, bicameral compromise last week<\/a><\/u><\/span>, leading to today\u2019s Senate passage of both bills. Together, SB 495 and HB 4141 will require all\u00a0public school\u00a0districts to implement cell phone policies to reduce student usage and distractions in the classroom with exceptions for emergencies.\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u201cAs a former teacher, I know firsthand how much student cell phone use impedes the ability to focus and learn in the classroom.\u00a0While my legislative colleagues and I have long agreed that addressing this issue\u00a0is critical for Michigan kids,\u00a0we\u2019ve had to work together\u00a0across the aisle\u00a0to find common ground\u00a0on a\u00a0bicameral\u00a0solution that best meets the needs of our schools \u2014 and I\u2019m proud that we\u2019ve successfully been able to do just that,\u201d said Sen. <b>Polehanki<\/b>, Chair of the Senate Education Committee. \u201cMy House Democratic colleagues also played a crucial role in today\u2019s passage of these bipartisan bills, standing\u00a0resolute\u00a0until we\u00a0all came to an agreement that\u00a0truly\u00a0benefits\u00a0our students and schools.\u00a0This is a win that will not only make a positive difference in\u00a0our\u00a0classrooms\u00a0but also show the people of Michigan that despite our\u00a0political differences, we <i>can <\/i>come together and deliver bipartisan solutions to the problems facing our state.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div data-ogsc=\"rgb(0, 0, 0)\">SB 495\u00a0has been sent\u00a0to the House of Representatives where it awaits\u00a0further consideration.
