(Jan.\u00a014, 2026) \u2014\u00a0Today,\u00a0after months of bipartisan, bicameral negotiation\u00a0led by Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Dayna\u00a0Polehanki<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Livonia),\u00a0lawmakers came to an agreement on legislation to\u00a0restrict\u00a0student\u00a0cell phone use\u00a0during instructional time\u00a0in\u00a0Michigan\u00a0schools.\u00a0Together,<span>\u00a0<\/span><span><u><a id=\"OWA51b3f0c0-4229-f7cd-973f-0a05abe0e544\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW38200411 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0495\" data-linkindex=\"1\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0495\">Senate Bill (SB) 495<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0and<span>\u00a0<\/span><span><u><a id=\"OWA3095c037-8041-403d-19e7-3b9c12565112\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW38200411 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-HB-4141\" data-linkindex=\"2\" title=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-HB-4141\">House Bill (HB) 4141<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0will\u00a0require all\u00a0public school\u00a0districts to implement cell phone policies aimed at reducing student usage and distractions in the classroom, with exceptions for emergencies. In response\u00a0to today&#8217;s House passage of HB 4141,\u00a0Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Polehanki<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>has issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a former educator, Chair of the Senate Education Committee, and lead sponsor of Senate Bill 495, I\u2019m proud that I was able to successfully work across the aisle and across chambers to strike a compromise that addresses the growing issue of cell phone use in our classrooms while also meeting the needs of our schools and allowing exceptions for emergency situations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s\u00a0common-sense agreement\u00a0was\u00a0also\u00a0made possible by the\u00a0hard work\u00a0of\u00a0my\u00a0House\u00a0Democratic colleagues, who\u00a0stood firm\u00a0until a bipartisan agreement could be reached that best serves our schools.\u00a0This solution\u00a0gives districts\u00a0the\u00a0flexibility they need\u00a0to implement a policy\u00a0that will keep phones out of the hands of students during the most critical time of the school day\u00a0\u2014 when\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0learning in the classroom.\u00a0Let\u2019s\u00a0get these bills to the governor\u2019s desk and continue working together to find common ground on solutions that improve the well-being of Michigan kids.\u201d\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" style=\"text-align: center;\">###<\/div>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LANSING, Mich.
