These are bills that would\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/hertel\/2025\/01\/30\/legislation-blocked-by-house-republicans\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">lower health care costs for teachers and first responders<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/shink\/2025\/01\/30\/stalled-legislation\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">improve retirement benefits for corrections officers<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. But instead of following the Michigan Constitution and putting the interests of his constituents and residents statewide before his own, Republican Speaker Matt Hall has chosen to play political games every step of the way \u2014 forcing Senate Democrats to take him to court.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After a lengthy legal battle where judge after judge has decided in our favor, we have another victory: this week, the Michigan Court of Appeals ruled once again in our favor and is requiring Speaker Hall to present the nine bills to Gov. Their work is defined by uncertainty, yet they choose to sacrifice their own comfort and safety for the security of others. From police officers to firefighters and paramedics, the critical work of these individuals is essential in keeping you, your family, and our community safe. But we\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0stop there.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Before passing the 2026 state budget earlier this month, the Senate Appropriations Committee held a hearing to review each of the individual enhancement grants we fought to include in the final budget agreement.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:257}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">And, last week, my colleagues and I passed\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SB-0596\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 596<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0with bipartisan support \u2014 legislation that requires all legislative directed spending items, including enhancement grants and earmarks, to be publicly\u00a0disclosed\u00a0on the Senate or House website before the passage of the state budget. Championed by Appropriations Chair Sen.
