(Aug. 6, 2025) \u2014 Months ago, Senate Democrats passed a <span><u><a id=\"OWA63705a39-bbaf-af3d-3e7e-5d68c1d43107\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW118009822 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/29\/education-budget\/#:~:text=Students%2C%20Teachers%20First-,Apr%2029%2C%202025,-%7C%20Press%20Release\" data-linkindex=\"1\" title=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2025\/04\/29\/education-budget\/#:~:text=Students%2C%20Teachers%20First-,Apr%2029%2C%202025,-%7C%20Press%20Release\">record education budget proposal<\/a><\/u><\/span> that prioritizes the needs of Michigan students, parents, educators, and public schools, with ample time to negotiate and finalize a bipartisan state budget by the July 1 deadline \u2014 which is critical for schools who are tasked with setting their own budgets for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n<p>And although it was entirely avoidable, Republican Speaker of the House <b>Matt Hall <\/b>and House Republicans stalled the budget process by failing to put forth an adequate education budget, missing that imperative deadline. Now, without knowing what funding they can rely on from the state, Michigan public schools have begun <span><u><a id=\"OWAe39d025c-3ec6-1953-b8a1-119b0bed3e2e\" class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW118009822 x_BCX0 x_OWAAutoLink\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2025\/08\/05\/brixie-slams-michigan-house-gop-over-lack-of-budget-as-okemos-schools-ends-free-meals-for-all\/\" data-linkindex=\"2\" title=\"https:\/\/michiganadvance.com\/2025\/08\/05\/brixie-slams-michigan-house-gop-over-lack-of-budget-as-okemos-schools-ends-free-meals-for-all\/\">announcing the discontinuation<\/a><\/u><\/span> of the free school meals program. In response, Sen. <b>Dayna Polehanki <\/b>(D-Livonia) has issued the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;With federal policies causing costs to continue to rise and a growing atmosphere of uncertainty in state and federal policies, you\u2019d think the Republican party would be doing everything in its power to ensure no Michigan child goes without access to food. Yet House Republicans are still in no hurry to pass a realistic education budget as public schools are being forced to end the successful universal free breakfast and lunch program that has ensured access to healthy meals for millions of Michigan students. Make no mistake: as Republicans continue to play political games instead of working on a budget, Michigan children <i>will <\/i>go hungry, and it is <i>unconscionable<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMatt Hall hasn\u2019t been a serious negotiator throughout the budget process, and House Republicans\u2019 half-hearted school budget would gut our public education system \u2014 cutting funding for special education, school safety, at-risk students, mental health services, technical education, and the popular universal school meals program.
