The Michigan House Education and Workforce Committee unanimously approved two bills that would let students opt out of the workforce-readiness part of the state’s standardized test, which measures preparedness for skilled trades.
The bills would also introduce new informational materials for districts to distribute about the importance of the test, which representatives from multiple trade associations noted as a strong positive.
The bills, House Bill 4836 and Senate Bill 349, were authored by Rep. Brad Paquette (R-Niles) and Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia), respectively, both of whom formerly taught high school juniors who had to take the tests in question.
