Testimony on my bill, which is part of a three-bill package to protect Michiganders from MICROPLASTICS pollution in our water.
"This legislation addresses a pressing threat to Michigan's water --microplastics.
Emerging scientific evidence shows that tiny plastic particles are finding their way into our Great Lakes, our rivers, and even our drinking water systems.
The lack of consistent testing standards and statewide data make it difficult to make informed decisions about how best to protect our communities.
Senate Bill 504 would change that.
It creates a statewide program requiring the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy to test quarterly for microplastics from July 2027 through July 2030.
The testing will include a variety of water sources and ensures that a wide variety of communities are represented in the data.
Beyond the collection of data, Senate Bill 504 ensures accountability and transparency.
By July 2031, EGLE will publish and submit a comprehensive report to the Legislature dealing with where microplastics are found, in what amounts, and what we know about their risks.
EGLE will also provide recommendations and strategies for future monitoring and mitigation.
This is a crucial and essential step toward protecting Michigan's public health and preserving the integrity of Michigan's drinking water.
Michigan is home to 20% of the world's freshwater.
We have a moral and economic responsibility to protect that water for the millions of people who depend on it.
So, I urge my colleagues to to support this legislation." ... See MoreSee Less
