Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow proudly represents the 8th Senate District, which includes Northwest Detroit and 10 municipalities in Oakland County. First elected in 2018, Senator McMorrow has established herself as a dedicated public servant committed to practical solutions that improve the lives of Michigan residents. She currently serves as Senate Majority Whip, the first woman in state history to hold this position, and as Chair of the Economic Community Development Committee and Vice Chair of the Oversight Committee.<\/p>\n

<\/span>She authored the state\u2019s first-ever Extreme Risk Protection Order (or \u201cred flag\u201d) gun violence prevention law and has worked to raise wages and strengthen unions, eliminate the retirement tax on seniors, repeal the state\u2019s 1931 abortion ban, expand access to reproductive healthcare, expand free community college and career training, and fund universal k-12 school meals. She also helped secure major investments for public transit, public schools, childcare, clean water, and local downtown revitalization.<\/p>\n

Senator McMorrow additionally serves on several key committees, including Appropriations, Elections & Ethics, and the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules. Her legislative priorities focus on strengthening public education, protecting the environment, reforming economic development to center prosperity for Michigan residents and support small business owners and entrepreneurs, gun violence prevention, protecting Michiganders against domestic violence, and advancing civil rights.<\/p>\n

<\/span>Prior to her election to the Michigan Senate, McMorrow worked as an industrial designer and creative director, bringing innovative problem-solving skills to her legislative work. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, she combines her background in design thinking with a passion for effective governance.<\/p>\n

<\/span>She lives in Royal Oak with her husband, Ray, their daughter, Noa, and their rescue dog, Detroit.<\/p>\n

Senator Mallory McMorrow is an ardent supporter of policies protecting reproductive rights, empowering local communities, and making Michigan a business- and family-friendly state. She is the Senate Majority Whip and serving her second term in the Michigan Senate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has a deep affinity for the automotive industry after working for more than a decade in product design, media and advertising with companies like Mazda, Mattel, Gawker Media, Hearst and other global brands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

McMorrow hit the ground running during her first term in the Michigan Senate, winning policy changes such as ending Michigan\u2019s tampon tax, helping struggling businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, and protecting certain individuals (including domestic violence survivors) by creating an address confidentiality program. She also became an overnight sensation for a floor speech standing up against false, bigoted, homophobic attacks on her and her colleagues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She earned her bachelor\u2019s degree in industrial design from the University of Notre Dame and resides in Royal Oak with her husband, Ray, their daughter, Noa, and their rescue dog, Detroit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
