(Jan. 26, 2022) \u2014 Sen. <strong>Sean McCann<\/strong> (D-Kalamazoo) issued the following statement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer unveiled her proposals to repeal the retirement tax and increase the Earned Income Tax Credit during her annual State of the State address this evening:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA decade ago, as a State Representative, I voted against imposing the Retirement Tax and slashing the Michigan Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), so I\u2019m eager to support the repeal of the retirement tax and increased restoration of the EITC now. I look forward to working with my colleagues and Governor Gretchen Whitmer on these two tax relief measures that would have a substantial positive impact on the pocketbooks of Michigan\u2019s seniors and working families. Under the governor\u2019s proposals, at the end of the day, they would keep more of the money they worked so hard to earn.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The governor\u2019s proposal would restore Michigan\u2019s EITC to 20% of the federal credit after it had been slashed to 6% in 2011. The refundable credit helps more than 730,000 families a year. In the 2019 tax year, eligible families received an average credit of $150, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-michigan-gretchen-whitmer-tax-refunds-3928a19523db57e653701e919827ac1e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report by the Associated Press<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">###&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KALAMAZOO, Mich.
