Lowering Cots and Investing in Students

My Senate colleagues and I passed a bold 2025 state budget last year, securing transformative investments for students, schools, and staff all across Michigan and right here in Macomb and Wayne counties. Along with raising per-pupil funding statewide and reimbursing schools for some of their payroll costs, we also:

  • Expanded Free Breakfast and Lunch to All Students
Ensured that all Michigan public school students could receive free breakfast and lunch so they could focus on their learning.
  • Prepared More Kids for Kindergarten
Increased eligibility for the free Great Start Readiness Pre-K Program, opening more opportunities for children to gain early insight into math, reading, and thinking skills while learning how to get along with others.
  • Strengthened Higher Education Opportunities
Expanded access to free community college for all students in every part of the state with the Community College Guarantee.
  • Supported Youth to Meet Proficiency Standards
Equipped districts with the tools to ensure all students are proficient in English language arts and mathematics and are prepared to succeed in high school and beyond.

Senate Passes Historic Momnibus Bills to Improve Maternal Health Outcomes

Everyone deserves access to a safe, affirming pregnancy and birthing experience. In April, the Michigan Senate’s passage of the “Momnibus” made significant progress on that goal. This important legislation will improve integrity and accountability in Michigan’s maternal health care system, helping every family have an equitable opportunity to experience a healthy, empowering pregnancy and birth. The community-driven bill package will help tackle racial and ethnic maternal health disparities and improve outcomes for moms and babies alike.

Senate Bills 29-34 and 36-39 passed the Senate with bipartisan support and are now currently awaiting action in the Michigan House of Representatives.
