(Oct. 27, 2021) \u2014 Sen.&nbsp;<strong>Jeff Irwin<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Ann Arbor) has issued the following supportive statement after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer issued&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/MIEOG\/2021\/10\/27\/file_attachments\/1978458\/ED%202021-08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Executive Directive 2021-08<\/a>&nbsp;today, which calls for state departments to minimize purchasing products that contain PFAS.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a step in the right direction. By effectively reducing the purchasing of products containing PFAS, Governor Whitmer is prioritizing the health and safety of state workers and Michiganders. Sure, it\u2019s nice that my eggs don\u2019t stick to the pan in the morning, but these toxic, \u2018forever chemicals\u2019 endanger our health and pollute the water and wildlife around us. Now it\u2019s up to the Legislature to follow the governor\u2019s lead, ban PFAS and protect all Michiganders from the serious, long-term dangers of these chemicals.\u201d<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PFAS have been linked to several adverse health effects including testicular cancer, high cholesterol, low infant birth weights, compromised immune systems, kidney cancer, infertility, and thyroid hormone disruption. On July 15,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/irwin\/news\/2021\/07\/01\/ann-arbor-legislators-propose-ban-on-use-of-toxic-pfas-chemicals-in-food-packaging-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sen. Irwin introduced Senate Bill 591 to ban toxic PFAS, BPA, and phthalate \u2018forever chemicals\u2019 from the manufacturing and sale of food packaging in Michigan<\/a>. The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Environmental Quality, where it has not yet been acted upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">###<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LANSING, Mich.
