I am disappointed that the Senate just passed legislation facilitating carbon capture in Michigan. This boondoggle is another subsidy to help fossil fuel companies.
Here's why I voted no:
1. Carbon capture is incredibly expensive. Our rates are already too high. We shouldn't have to pay for dirtier, more expensive energy.
2. Carbon capture often generates more CO2 pollution than they capture. An amendment to require net CO2 reduction was defeated.
3. These carbon storage areas, geological formations that will hopefully retain the CO2, revert to public ownership after private companies are done with them. The taxpayers will be forced to take ownership of the costs and liabilities 50 years after they're done depositing CO2 or sooner if the Department decides to allow it. ... See MoreSee Less
