Food banks and food rescue organizations are hurting. Here in the 15th district, Food Gatherers is the essential partner to community pantries and people in need of healthy food.

Nobody should go hungry in our country; but, due to federal cuts and rising prices, food security has never been more precarious.

While federal cuts to food stamps/SNAP are planned for 2027 and 2028, food banks are already feeling the pinch. Food Gatherers reports that they're seeing:

20% less food from USDA

Meat and dairy are especially difficult as inflation is hitting poor people and organizations like Food Gatherers who help those in need.

If you can help one of the best food rescue organizations in the world and a pillar of our local safety net, please do: www.foodgatherers.org/

Microplastics are in our water and they're in your brain. Microplastic concentrations in Great Lakes fish and in our water are only increasing and we need to do more to prevent plastic pollution from invading our bodies.

Senator Susan E. Shink, Senator Dayna Polehanki and I have introduced legislation, along with Rep Laurie Pohutsky, Rep Mentzer, and Rep Paiz, to address the growing threats to our health and our environment from microplastics.

Senate Bill 503 (Irwin)/House Bill 4766 (Pohutsky) — Ban the manufacturing, selling, or distribution of materials containing plastic microbeads.

Senate Bill 504 (Polehanki)/House Bill 4767 (Paiz) — Create a microplastics sampling program within the Michigan Dept. of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to analyze state drinking water supplies, make a risk assessment, and
recommend actions for future monitoring and mitigation.

Senate Bill 505 (Shink)/House Bill 4768 (Mentzer) — Establish a statewide microplastics research and monitoring plan to assess the scale of microplastics contamination, assess risks posed to human health and the environment, and provide
recommendations for next steps to address microplastics pollution.
