<\/i><\/span>LANSING, Mich.\u00a0(Dec.\u00a017, 2025) \u2014\u00a0Today,\u00a0Sens.\u00a0<\/span>Darrin Camilleri\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Trenton),\u00a0<\/span>Kevin Hertel<\/b>\u00a0(D-St. Clair Shores),\u00a0<\/span>Stephanie Chang\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Detroit), and\u00a0<\/span>Dayna\u00a0Polehanki\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Livonia)\u00a0introduced a comprehensive bill package to\u00a0better protect\u00a0Michigan kids\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>well-documented dangers<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0increasing\u00a0social media\u00a0and\u00a0Artificial\u00a0Intelligence (AI)\u00a0usage.\u00a0<\/span>Senate Bills\u00a0757<\/a><\/u><\/span>–760<\/a><\/u><\/span> would implement stronger safety measures that prevent social media companies and AI platforms from targeting and exploiting minors.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years, we have seen tech giants engage in pure, profit-driven practices without any regard for the well-being of their users, no matter their age,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Camilleri<\/b>. \u201cTheir goal is simple: to keep people, including our kids, addicted to endless scrolling and content consumption, even when it threatens their mental health, development, or safety. As long as they can monetize that harm, they will keep doing it. And since Big Tech won\u2019t provide the necessary guardrails needed to protect our kids, we\u2019re stepping up and holding them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Social media did not protect her; it exposed her to harms no child should ever face. I am still stuck in that moment,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Charay Gadd<\/b>, London\u2019s mom from Ovid. \u201cNo parent should have to beg a corporation to understand how their child was harmed. Michigan must protect our children \u2014 they are our future.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we\u00a0continue rapidly\u00a0accelerating\u00a0further into the age of\u00a0digital\u00a0and\u00a0AI\u00a0advancements,\u00a0our youth are\u00a0<\/span>bearing the brunt of\u00a0the\u00a0adverse\u00a0consequences<\/a><\/u><\/span>.\u00a0While Big Tech\u00a0employs exploitive algorithms that\u00a0<\/span>undermine data privacy<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>prey on vulnerable users<\/a><\/u><\/span>,\u00a0American kids\u00a0are\u00a0in turn\u00a0facing unprecedented levels of\u00a0<\/span>mental health struggles<\/a><\/u><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>social media addiction<\/a><\/u><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>exposure to explicit\u00a0content<\/a><\/u><\/span>, an alarming\u00a0<\/span>decline of social skills<\/a><\/u><\/span>, among\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>slew\u00a0of\u00a0other\u00a0harmful\u00a0repercussions<\/a><\/u><\/span>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs the father of two young boys, one of the biggest concerns I have is how I can keep my kids safe in an increasingly digital world where Big Tech companies seem to do everything in their power to prioritize profit over their well-being,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span>Hertel<\/b>. \u201cI\u2019ve seen firsthand that existing parental controls are simply not equipped to protect kids from a constant stream of advertisements and inappropriate content. And as study after study shows the real harm that unregulated screen time and social media access can cause, it\u2019s clear we must give parents every tool possible to stand up to Big Tech\u2019s exploitative practices and keep their children safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Big Tech CEOs refuse to take responsibility for their products that endanger kids, then our elected leaders must make them, the same way we require automakers to install seatbelts and chemical companies to put child-proof caps on pesticides,\u201d said Macomb County parent\u00a0<\/span>Christy King<\/b>. \u201cCyber bullies and online predators endanger all families, regardless of politics, and that\u2019s why we call on legislators from both parties to pass tough new laws without delay.\u201d<\/p>\n

Crafted in tandem with industry experts, advocates, and parents, this bill package aims to hold Big Tech companies accountable for unethical practices, empower Michigan parents with more control and transparency, and address emerging risks associated with AI and social media use. More specifically:<\/p>\n
