(Dec. 9, 2025) \u2014 Today, a group of Michigan elected officials sent a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field directors in Michigan and Texas, urging them to release four Western International High School students and their families:<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Kerly Mariangel Sosa Rivero<\/b>\u00a0and her father,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Gleiner\u00a0Jose Sosa Mujica<\/b>;<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Antony Janier Pe\u00f1a Sosa<\/b>\u00a0and his mother,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Maryeli Antonieta Sosa Marquina<\/b>;<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Mor Ba<\/b>; and<b>\u00a0Santiago Jesus Zamora Perez<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and his mother,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Evelin Josefina Perez<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>These young people and their parents arrived in the United States from Venezuela or\u00a0Senegal, and all have pending asylum cases. The students are all following the immigration process and are not\u00a0considered\u00a0a risk\u00a0to public safety.<br \/><br \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\"><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" role=\"presentation\"><b>Kerly<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>is 16 years old and is in 11th grade. She is passionate about music, loves alternative indie rock, works at Chili\u2019s,\u00a0and plays volleyball.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Antony<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Kerly\u2019s<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>cousin, is also 16 years old,\u00a0is in the 10th grade, and is\u00a0very intelligent,\u00a0soft-spoken,\u00a0friendly,\u00a0and academically ambitious.\u00a0He\u00a0plays\u00a0the violin,\u00a0excels\u00a0in an Advanced Placement art class, is rapidly learning English,\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0works at Chili\u2019s. ICE detained<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Kerly<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Gleiner<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Antony<\/b>, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Maryeli<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>at their home in Detroit on Nov.\u00a020,\u00a02025,\u00a0without a warrant.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Kerly<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Gleiner<\/b>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Antony<\/b>,\u00a0and<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Maryeli<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>are all currently being held at Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" role=\"presentation\"><b>Mor Ba<\/b>\u00a0is 19 years old and a recent graduate of Western International High School. He arrived in the United States from Senegal at the age of 17 and has a pending asylum application. He has a 3.12 GPA and was ranked 5th in his class. Mor was pulled over on Nov.\u00a026, 2025, by unmarked vehicles. He is currently detained at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin, Michigan.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\" role=\"presentation\"><b>Santiago<\/b> is 17 years old and is in\u00a0the 11th\u00a0grade. He has excellent grades and is a star baseball player, with dreams of playing in college. Santiago and his mother were detained by the Fraser\u00a0Police Department on Dec.\u00a07,\u00a02025,\u00a0after driving under the speed limit, with the police then alerting immigration enforcement officials. They are currently being held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center in Texas, despite a Temporary Restraining Order issued by a federal judge.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\n<p>\u201cThe abduction of these students is unconscionable,\u201d said Sen.<b>\u00a0Erika Geiss<\/b> (D-Taylor). \u201cICE is separating good, hardworking people from their homes, their schools, and their workplace. These students and their families came to this country to seek a better life, and instead are the victims of political violence at the hands of an indiscriminating agency that is abusing its power. I swiftly urge their release and return to their homes in our community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese Detroit students should be in their classrooms, not torn from their community,\u201d said Congresswoman<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Rashida Tlaib<\/b> (MI-12). \u201cIt is cruel and unacceptable for ICE to traumatize young people and their families who came here seeking a better life and an opportunity to thrive. I am demanding their immediate release. Our children deserve safety, human dignity, the love of their families, and the freedom to pursue their dreams without being terrorized by a system that treats them as disposable. Detroit will always stand with our immigrant neighbors, and we will not stop fighting until these students and their parents are brought home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKerly, Antony, Mor, and Santiago, along with their parents, are simply following the legal process and trying to gain asylum as they seek a better life in Detroit,\u201d said Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Stephanie Chang<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Detroit). \u201cICE should immediately return these high school students and their parents home to Detroit so they can continue to learn, work and grow without the fear and violence they fled. Immigrants and asylum seekers are deserving of safety and dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese Detroit students belong in their classrooms with their friends\u00a0\u2014\u00a0not alone in detention centers thousands of miles away,\u201d said<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Gabriela Santiago Romero<\/b>, Detroit City Councilmember for District 6. \u201cAs an immigrant and proud Detroiter, I am heartbroken and outraged by the fear these harmful actions inflict on young people who came here seeking safety and protection. ICE must release them immediately so they can continue their education, keep their families together, and pursue their asylum cases with dignity. Detroiters will not look away while our children are taken. We stand with our students and the immigrant families who make our city strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese students should be home for the holidays with their families, focused on school and their futures, not separated and detained far from their communities through enforcement actions that traumatize young people, lack transparency and basic due process,\u201d said Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b>Mary Cavanagh<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>(D-Redford Twp.). \u201cAs Chair of the Michigan Latino Caucus, I am deeply troubled by the harm these actions cause, not just to immigrant families, but to all of us.
