LANSING, Mich. (June 26, 2025) \u2014 This week, several Senate and House legislators introduced the \u201cTeach MI History\u201d legislation, ensuring students across the state are taught inclusive history lessons reflecting the many diverse communities that call our state home. Today, Senate Bills 453-455 were introduced in the Senate, sponsored by Sens. Stephanie Chang<\/b> (D-Detroit), Darrin Camilleri<\/b> (D-Trenton), and Erika Geiss <\/b>(D-Taylor). The House versions of these bills, House Bills 4687<\/a><\/u><\/span>–4689<\/a><\/u><\/span>, were introduced yesterday by Reps. Jason Hoskins<\/b> (D-Southfield), Veronica Paiz<\/b> (D-Harper Woods), and Matt Koleszar <\/b>(D-Plymouth). This legislation was crafted using feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders and marks a major step forward in establishing a more complete story of Michigan’s collective history.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll Michigan children deserve to see themselves reflected in the history taught in their classrooms,\u201d said Sen. Chang<\/b>, one of the sponsors of the bill package. \u201cBy teaching the triumphs and struggles of all communities, including communities of color, we strengthen the knowledge and critical thinking skills of our students. We can build greater cultural understanding and lessen the hate and intolerance in our communities \u2014 starting with our young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis legislation is about telling the whole truth, not just the parts of history that are comfortable,\u201d said Rep. Hoskins<\/b>. \u201cWhen we teach the full story of Michigan \u2014 the triumphs and the injustices; the joys and the pains \u2014 we help build a more honest and compassionate future. Our children deserve an education that reflects the state they live in and the people who built it. A history that reflects them. I\u2019m proud to stand behind Teach MI History.\u201d<\/p>\n
