(July 17, 2024) \u2014 Sen.\u202f<b>Stephanie Chang<\/b>\u202f (D-Detroit) praised the announcement by the\u202fDept. of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) and U.S. Ecology of a\u202f<span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW16530855 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWAc38b19f1-2f60-b58d-c525-a02103cd852f\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/egle\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024\/07\/16\/egle-us-ecology-detroit-south-enter-agreement\" data-linkindex=\"1\">consent order\u202f<\/a><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW16530855 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA923559e1-d4ea-5c53-d307-fae2c7420374\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/egle\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2024\/07\/16\/egle-us-ecology-detroit-south-enter-agreement\" data-linkindex=\"2\">agreement<\/a><\/u><\/span>\u202fto address hazardous waste violations in her district dating back to 2020. \u202fThe $1\u202fmillion agreement includes penalties, reimbursement to the state for enforcement costs as well as a\u202fsignificant sum for supplemental environmental projects (SEPs) to benefit the community through various public health protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis consent agreement has been a long time coming and is a victory for those residents affected\u202fby this hazardous waste,\u201d said Sen. <b>Chang<\/b> (D-Detroit). \u201cI applaud the tenacity and hard work of the Detroit Hamtramck Coalition\u202ffor Advancing Healthy Environments, who have advocated for a good quality of life for their neighbors for many years as they have faced numerous air quality and health concerns due to the facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look forward to seeing the development of the supplemental environmental projects and hope they will be designed with community input to maximize benefits to the neighborhood\u2019s air quality. It is imperative and commonsense that\u202fcommunities affected by air pollution violations directly benefit from air quality fines collected by the\u202fstate. That is exactly what <span><u><a class=\"x_Hyperlink x_SCXW16530855 x_BCX8 x_OWAAutoLink\" id=\"OWA644c0a3e-2852-b679-dfa6-bc2221fe11cf\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2023-SB-0026\" data-linkindex=\"3\">Senate Bill 26<\/a><\/u><\/span> does and I\u2019m proud that my legislation has advanced through the Senate and through the House committee process.
