Legislation sponsored by Anthony, Chang, Geiss and Cavanagh\u00a0will improve access to\u00a0reproductive healthcare, affirm rights of all Michiganders<\/span><\/i><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


LANSING, Mich. (October 19, 2023) \u2014 Today, the Michigan Senate passed the Reproductive Health Act, Senate Bills\u00a0<\/span>474<\/span><\/a>–<\/span>477<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0The legislation, sponsored respectively by Sen.\u00a0Sarah<\/b>\u00a0Anthony<\/b>\u00a0(D-Lansing), Sen.\u00a0Stephanie Chang<\/b>\u00a0(D-Detroit),\u00a0Sen.\u00a0Erika Geiss\u00a0<\/b>(D-Taylor)\u00a0and Sen.\u00a0Mary Cavanagh<\/b>\u00a0(D- Redford Twp.), will protect and\u00a0expand access to reproductive healthcare\u00a0for Michiganders statewide.<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span>The Reproductive Health Act includes repealing medically unnecessary regulations, such as current stringent building requirements that have nothing to do with actual patient care. The bills also remove reporting requirements and administrative burdens that are not placed on any other healthcare providers.\u00a0These restrictions, which were intentionally woven throughout Michigan\u2019s laws\u00a0in the past, have made the process of affirming everyone\u2019s\u00a0right to reproductive freedom challenging.<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span>\u201cIn passing the Reproductive Health Act, our caucus has affirmed and uplifted many Michigan residents, especially those in marginalized and underserved communities. I am\u00a0proud that this legislation reflects the true needs and interests of advocates and constituents,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0Anthony<\/b>. \u201cThe issue of reproductive freedom has been\u00a0overly\u00a0politicized for way too long. Now, we\u00a0must return the power of personal choice into the hands of the people\u00a0<\/span>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0where\u00a0it belonged\u00a0all along.\u201d<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span>\u201cFor too long, Michigan\u2019s laws on abortion were based on partisan talking points, not real-life experiences or accurate medical guidance,\u201d said Senate Majority Leader\u00a0Winnie<\/b>\u00a0Brinks\u00a0<\/b>(D-Grand Rapids). \u201cBut voters made it clear that, while opinions may differ, we share a belief in the right for individuals to make these important decisions themselves. Today, we\u2019re affirming people\u2019s right to determine their own path while also cutting through the unnecessary red tape that only served to punish patients, medical providers, and their clinics.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade<\/i>, nearly 2.5\u00a0million Michigan voters showed overwhelming support for Proposal 3 in November 2022 \u2014 making it abundantly clear how Michiganders felt about reproductive freedom. The Reproductive Health Act better aligns Michigan\u2019s laws with the new reproductive health protections in Michigan\u2019s constitution and the repeal of the 1931 abortion ban passed by Senate Democrats earlier this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAs the new majority, our work must include dismantling unnecessary barriers to reproductive healthcare. At the end of the day, reproductive healthcare\u00a0is<\/i>\u00a0healthcare,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0Chang<\/b>. \u201cFor decades, restrictions were intentionally placed within Michigan\u2019s laws and have impeded the process of affirming everyone\u2019s\u00a0right to reproductive freedom. These bills are based on scientific facts and are not informed by misguided opinions of a small demographic\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2014 they\u2019re\u00a0inclusive and representative of our state<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span>\u201cI firmly believe that those who can become pregnant deserve to be given the power and freedom to make their own medical decisions, without outside judgment or interference,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0Geiss<\/b>. \u201cThe Reproductive Health Act sends a powerful message that we are serious about protecting\u00a0the rights of all Michiganders\u00a0<\/span>\u2014\u00a0<\/span>regardless of their gender, race, income, or ZIP\u00a0code.\u202fThis legislation ensures that legal loopholes do not infringe upon their rights any further.\u201d\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span>The Reproductive Health Act is a comprehensive package of bills that have received support from various stakeholders, medical experts\u00a0and reproductive health advocates. Previous\u00a0iterations of Reproductive Health Act bills were introduced in earlier sessions, and the bills passed today incorporated feedback from\u00a0constituents and the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>diverse\u00a0perspectives they hold.<\/span> <\/p>\n

<\/span>\u201cSupporting Michigan students and promoting both information and education regarding\u00a0their reproductive healthcare choices is vital. Allowing colleges and universities to provide\u00a0referrals for abortion services in pregnant and parenting student services offices is an essential part of that support,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0Cavanagh<\/b>. \u201cEvery Michigander deserves access to all the resources necessary to make an informed decision about their reproductive health without unnecessary restriction, and this legislation expands that accessibility.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
