(<\/span>October 11<\/span>, 2023) \u2014\u00a0<\/span>Today<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0during Domestic Violence Awareness Month,<\/span>\u00a0the Michigan Senate passed\u00a0<\/span>Senate Bills\u00a0<\/span><\/span>471<\/span><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>472<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>528<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0to strengthen domestic violence protections in Michigan and help prevent firearm injury and death.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>legislative package \u2014<\/span>\u00a0sponsored by Sens.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Stephanie Chang<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-Detroit) and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sue\u00a0<\/span>Shink<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-Northfield Twp<\/span>.<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<\/span>mirrors federal law an<\/span>d\u00a0<\/span>modif<\/span>ies<\/span>\u00a0the state\u2019s penal code to protect domestic violence survivors by\u00a0<\/span>prohibiting\u00a0<\/span>those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes from\u00a0<\/span>possessing<\/span>, using,\u00a0<\/span>purchasing<\/span>\u00a0or carrying a firearm in Michigan for eight years.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Michigan is finally taking<\/span>\u00a0these<\/span>\u00a0important steps forward to save lives and protect domestic violence survivors.\u00a0<\/span>The intersection of firearms and domestic violence\u00a0<\/span>ha<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>been\u00a0<\/span>a crisis facing too many in our state<\/span>,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Chang<\/span><\/span><\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>This legislation\u00a0<\/span>continues to have\u00a0<\/span>bipartisan support and serves as a common-sense solution<\/span>\u00a0to protecting survivors and keeping Michigan families safe.\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>grateful for\u00a0<\/span>all of<\/span>\u00a0the domestic violence survivors, domestic violence groups, law enforcement stakeholders and gun violence groups who have worked on these bills over the past five years. And\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019m<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>proud of\u00a0<\/span>my colleagues in the\u00a0<\/span>Senate for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>combatting<\/span>\u00a0this\u00a0<\/span>lethal\u00a0<\/span>cycle of abuse and gun violence<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
