(<\/span>September\u00a0<\/span><\/span>7<\/span>, 2023) \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Today<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Stephanie Chang<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-Detroit)<\/span>\u00a0and Rep.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Amos O’Neal<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0(D-Saginaw)<\/span>\u00a0introduced Senate Bill<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>471\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>472<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and House Bil<\/span>l<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>4945\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>4946\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>modify<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>state\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>penal code to<\/span>\u00a0protect domestic violence\u00a0<\/span><\/span>survivors by<\/span>\u00a0prevent<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence crimes from possessing, using, purchasing or carrying a firearm in Michigan for eight years<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This legislation\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mirrors federal law and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>would strengthen domestic violence protections in Michigan, helping\u00a0<\/span><\/span>prevent firearm<\/span>\u00a0injury<\/span>\u00a0and death<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201c<\/span>I have been working<\/span>\u00a0with domestic and gun violence prevention experts<\/span>\u00a0for years to address the issue of domestic violence and firearms<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>because\u00a0<\/span><\/span>too many\u00a0<\/span><\/span>survivors\u00a0<\/span><\/span>face dramatically increased risk<\/span>\u00a0from their abusers,\u201d said Sen.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>Chang<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. \u201c<\/span>We\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0seen how firearms and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>domestic<\/span>\u00a0violenc<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are a dangerous combination<\/span>, yet our cu<\/span>rrent state laws leave\u00a0<\/span><\/span>open a loophole t<\/span>hat can\u00a0<\/span><\/span>be exploited by abusers to obtain a firearm and wreak deadly havoc<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0This legislation\u00a0<\/span><\/span>has had bipartisan support<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>for many years and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>serves as a common-sense solution<\/span>\u00a0to t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span><\/span>problem and will protect survivors in our state from further abuse.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
