(April 20, 2023) \u2014 Sen.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">Stephanie Chang<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>(D-Detroit) and Rep.<span>\u00a0<\/span><b class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">Mike McFall<\/b><span>\u00a0<\/span>(D-Hazel Park) issued the following statement on the ongoing situation in Highland Park regarding the water and sewer judgment and what they are doing to advocate for Highland Park residents.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u201cWe\u2019ve heard from Highland Park leaders and residents about their concern over the recent Michigan Supreme Court decision regarding the city\u2019s outstanding water debt. This complicated issue has years of history, and while we acknowledge the city is in better financial shape than in years past, Highland Park residents, many of whom are in poverty or low-income households, simply do not have the financial ability to take on this judgment without devastating consequences\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u201cYesterday, we met with the governor\u2019s office and Michigan Department of Treasury officials to discuss options to address this issue, and over the past two weeks, we have been in constant communication with Mayor Glenda McDonald.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u201cOur goal as state policymakers who have the honor to serve Highland Park is that collectively, we are able to resolve the situation in a way that one, doesn\u2019t put this large\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">financial judgment on the backs of Highland Park residents, and two, addresses long-term water infrastructure needs of Highland Park. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u201cWe know that the state must follow the process laid out under the Michigan Local Financial Stability and Choice Act of 2012, and it is our understanding that the State Treasurer is following that law and reviewing the financial situation of Highland Park to determine the best course of action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">\u201cWe are committed to continuing our advocacy for the needs of the community and will continue to keep Highland Park residents and officials apprised of any additional information and the state\u2019s related actions, and of our ongoing efforts to help reach a resolution that does not adversely impact the people who call Highland Park home.\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\" align=\"center\"><span class=\"x_ContentPasted0\">###<\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LANSING, Mich.
