(March 1, 2023) \u2014 The Michigan Senate Health Policy Committee voted today to pass Senate Democrats\u2019 package of legislation to repeal Michigan\u2019s 1931 statute that criminalizes abortion care and related acts.\u00a0 The lead sponsors of the bills are Sen. <b>Erika Geiss<\/b> (D-Taylor), Sen. <b>Sarah Anthony<\/b> (D-Lansing), Sen. <b>Rosemary Bayer<\/b> (D-West Bloomfield), and Sen. <b>Stephanie Chang<\/b> (D-Detroit).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">The following bills were passed out of committee today: <\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li class=\"x_paragraph\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"1\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">Senate Bill 2<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\"> (Geiss), which repeals the 1931 ban on contraception and other information about reproductive health (by repealing section 40 of 1931 PA 328);\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_paragraph\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0037\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"2\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">Senate Bill 37<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\"> (Bayer), which would update the code of criminal procedure;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_paragraph\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0038\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"3\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">Senate Bill 38<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\"> (Chang), which would update the corrections code;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_paragraph\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"4\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">Senate Bill 39<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span> <span lang=\"EN\">(Geiss), which repeals Section 14 of 1931 PA 328 that criminalizes providing an abortion.<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"x_paragraph\"><span><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0093\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"5\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">Senate Bill 93<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/span><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\"> (Anthony), which repeals penalties for the sale of drugs or medicine to procure a miscarriage.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI am pleased to work with my colleagues on this legislation to ensure all Michiganders have access to the full range of reproductive health care, bodily autonomy, and the ability to make their own decisions without government interference,\u201d said Sen. <b>Geiss<\/b>. \u201cThe public spoke and demands of us to hear them, protect reproductive rights and freedom, and render these antiquated zombie laws struck down.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cReproductive health care decisions are between a patient and their doctor, period,\u201d said Sen. <b>Chang<\/b>. \u201cNo one should have their options for reproductive care limited by politics or other people&#8217;s beliefs\u2014especially those not grounded in science. I look forward to swift passage of these bills to advance reproductive freedom in Michigan.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">Almost 2.5 million Michiganders\u201456.7 percent of voters\u2014voted this fall to create a constitutional right to reproductive freedom and protect women, their bodies and their rights. The most urgent and pertinent part of fulfilling the public\u2019s will on Proposal 3 is repealing the 1931 ban on abortion, without exceptions for rape and incest, and related statutes. When this archaic and dangerous law was passed, women had only had the federal right to vote for a little over a decade. The legislation was drafted and enacted by an entirely male Legislature.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cI have always seen doing the people\u2019s work as my role and goal in the Legislature, and this package of bills does just that,\u201d said Sen. <b>Anthony<\/b>. \u201cMichigan voters spoke loud and clear about the need for reproductive freedom and for women to have control of their bodies enshrined in our laws, and my legislation and its companion bills is the final piece to accomplishing that.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">\u201cIt\u2019s fitting that these bills are moving on the first day of Women\u2019s History Month, as today, we are undoing the shameful history of the legislative actions in 1931 at the expense of\u2014and with no input from\u2014Michigan women,\u201d said Sen. <b>Bayer<\/b>. \u201cAnd at the exact same time, we are paving the way for a better, safer future and changing history for Michigan women now and in the future.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\"><span class=\"x_eop\"><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_paragraph\" align=\"center\"><span class=\"x_normaltextrun\"><span lang=\"EN\">###<\/span><\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LANSING, Mich.
