{"id":5388,"date":"2019-08-12T20:03:48","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T20:03:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/chang\/?p=5388"},"modified":"2019-08-12T20:03:48","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T20:03:48","slug":"chang-senators-call-for-resignation-of-civil-rights-department-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dev.senatedems.com\/chang\/2019\/08\/12\/chang-senators-call-for-resignation-of-civil-rights-department-director\/","title":{"rendered":"Chang, senators call for resignation of civil rights department director"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>LANSING \u2013 Today, Sen.&nbsp;<strong>Stephanie Chang<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Detroit) and members of the Senate Democratic Caucus \u2014 including Minority Leader&nbsp;<strong>Jim Ananich<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Flint) and Sens.&nbsp;<strong>Betty Jean Alexander<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Detroit),&nbsp;<strong>Rosemary Bayer<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Beverly Hills),&nbsp;<strong>Winnie Brinks&nbsp;<\/strong>(D-Grand Rapids),&nbsp;<strong>Marshall Bullock II<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Detroit),&nbsp;<strong>Erika Geiss&nbsp;<\/strong>(D-Taylor),&nbsp;<strong>Curtis Hertel Jr.&nbsp;<\/strong>(D-East Lansing),<strong>&nbsp;Adam Hollier&nbsp;<\/strong>(D-Detroit),&nbsp;<strong>Sean McCann<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Kalamazoo),&nbsp;<strong>Mallory McMorrow&nbsp;<\/strong>(D-Royal Oak),&nbsp;<strong>Dayna Polehanki<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Livonia),&nbsp;<strong>Sylvia Santana<\/strong>&nbsp;(D-Detroit) and&nbsp;<strong>Paul Wojno&nbsp;<\/strong>(D-Warren)&nbsp;\u2014 are calling for the resignation of Agustin Arbulu, director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR),&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2019\/08\/09\/civil-rights-director-agustin-arbulu\/1971114001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">after news reports revealed he made inappropriate, sexual comments objectifying women to a department colleague<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Michigan Department of Civil Rights is charged with investigating and addressing incidents of discrimination, bias and hate. We no longer have confidence Dr. Arbulu can appropriately lead in addressing such serious issues. Actions have consequences, and public officials are not immune to being held accountable for theirs.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arbulu was appointed to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission by former Gov. Rick Snyder in January 2013, serving as secretary until he left the Commission in October of 2015.
