LANSING, Mich. (April 13, 202<\/span>3<\/span>) \u2014\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Sen<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Mary Cavanagh<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>(D-Redford<\/span>\u00a0Twp.<\/span>)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and the Michigan\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Legislative\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Latino Caucus applaud the introduction of Senate Bills\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>265<\/span><\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>266<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>267<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0House Bills 4410, 4411, and 4412, which will allow all individuals, regardless of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>immigration status, to obtain driver\u2019s licenses. Currently, only individuals who pass the driver\u2019s test and prove legal citizenship status\u00a0<\/span><\/span>are allowed to<\/span>\u00a0receive a driver\u2019s license in Michigan, leaving immigrants without legal documentation unable to navigate the roads safely and legally.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cAs the daughter of a Mexican immigrant, first-generation American, and Chair of the Latino Caucus, I am a proud supporter and advocate of this much-needed legislation<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d said Sen<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Cavanagh<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cUntil 2008, proof of citizenship was not an\u00a0<\/span><\/span>additional<\/span>\u00a0barrier in accessing a driver’s license in Michigan<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>his legislation removes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that barrier\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and restores accessibility for every Michigander to the necessities of life from work,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>healthcare<\/span>\u00a0and education, while also promoting road safety and strengthening community trust. This will put the state in line with the other 19 states that put safety and their residents first. I look forward to finally pushing this across the finish line for every Michigander.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
