With all the chaos and confusion that the federal administration has brought to our doorsteps \u2014 including with the now-ended longest shutdown in American history \u2014 it seems like the time has flown by, and not in\u00a0a good way. Throughout it all, I want you to know that I have been fighting for you every step of the way. Because despite what so-called leaders at the federal level might lead you to believe, you\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">deserve\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">elected officials that look out for you, protect you, and work to make your life easier.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the holiday season around the corner, my Senate Democratic colleagues and I have\u00a0remained\u00a0hard at work doing just that. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this week<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, this legislation would ensure that Michiganders around the state can see where their hard-earned tax dollars are being spent.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559685&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senate Democrats Sound the Alarm on Skyrocketing Health Care Costs<\/span><\/b><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Open enrollment is well underway for 2026, and with Republicans in Washington refusing to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Enhanced Premium Tax Credit that has long kept care affordable and accessible, millions of Americans around the country are experiencing some sticker shock this season.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here in Michigan, where\u00a0nearly 500,000\u00a0people rely on this credit to afford care,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bridgemi.com\/michigan-health-watch\/five-reasons-health-insurance-rates-are-rising-so-much-in-michigan\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">insurers have increased rates more than 20% on average for next year<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Set to expire at the end of this year, the termination of the enhanced premium tax credit will have catastrophic consequences, not just for those who are enrolled in an ACA Marketplace plan, but for everyone. Health care premiums will spike, people will lose health insurance, thousands of jobs will be lost, and billions of dollars will be drained from the economy. Worst of all, when people are forced to forgo or delay the health care they need, they get sick.<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For months, my Senate Democratic colleagues and I have been sounding the alarm on Washington Republicans\u2019 assault on our health care access. From<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/hertel\/2025\/10\/22\/health-care-access\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/hertel\/2025\/10\/22\/health-care-access\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">holding a committee hearing<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to investigate the detrimental consequences to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2025-SR-0081\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">passing a resolution on the Senate Floor,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0demanding these so-called leaders do what they were elected to do:\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">protect their people<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and put a stop to this ensuing public health crisis by extending the ACA Enhanced Premium Tax Credit immediately.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Rx Kids on the Rise in Michigan<\/span><\/b><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Started as a pilot program in Flint to boost health outcomes for new moms and babies has now expanded its reach to more areas of Michigan thanks to\u00a0state\u00a0budget investments secured by Senate Democrats. As the\u00a0nation&#8217;s\u00a0first-ever prenatal and infant cash prescription program,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Rx Kids<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0provides $1,500 to moms during pregnancy and $500 for the first 6-12 months of a child\u2019s life, no-strings-attached. After launching in Flint in January of 2024, the program has now taken root in several other communities across the state, from Kalamazoo and the eastern Upper Peninsula to various cities in Oakland and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/santana\/2025\/11\/10\/rx-kids\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/santana\/2025\/11\/10\/rx-kids\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wayne County,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0now<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cityofypsilanti.com\/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2605\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cityofypsilanti.com\/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=2605\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">slated for Ypsilanti next month<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From helping to afford baby supplies and rent to groceries and everything in between, these extra resources provide crucial support to families at a time they need it most. And while new mom enrollees have shared firsthand about the programs\u2019 game-changing impact, over the past few months, research has continued to roll in to prove what we already know: Rx Kids works, and it works well. Through<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/rxkids-news\/in-the-news\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/rxkids.org\/rxkids-news\/in-the-news\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">evidence gathered from recent studies and surveys<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Rx Kids has been shown to deliver measurable improvements on not only maternal and infant health, but also on local\u00a0job\u00a0and economic growth.<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With the clear, proven benefits Rx Kids is bringing to families and communities around the state, Senate Democrats\u00a0remain\u00a0determined to expand it even further so that all moms-to-be can access\u00a0this life-changing program, no matter what zip code they call home.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Protecting our Immigrant Communities<\/span><\/b><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This month, the Senate Committee on Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety heard testimony on my package of bills designed to increase transparency and accountability in immigration enforcement here in Michigan.<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Since the beginning of this administration, we have\u00a0witnessed\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">harsh and frankly inhumane\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">immigration enforcement actions that strip our immigrant neighbors of their dignity, threaten individual rights and due process, and\u00a0ultimately put\u00a0the safety of all Michiganders at greater risk. This legislation establishes clear guidelines for how immigration enforcement may be conducted in our state, enhancing transparency, safeguarding civil rights, and strengthening trust in public institutions for all of our residents.<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senate Bill 508\u00a0establishes\u00a0protected spaces including schools, places of worship, hospitals, courthouses,\u00a0and\u00a0victim-service\u00a0organizations, where\u00a0immigration enforcement actions cannot occur unless there\u2019s imminent public danger or a judicial warrant. When citizens are afraid to attend school, care appointments, or court due to fear of detainment, our public health\u00a0and\u00a0safety\u00a0 decrease\u00a0overall. No one benefits when the services these spaces offer are put at risk by immigration enforcement actions. This policy is modeled after the federal \u201csensitive locations\u201d policy that was the precedent under both Democratic\u00a0and\u00a0Republican administrations, including our current President\u2019s first administration, since 1993.<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senate Bill 509 protects personal data privacy and prohibits government entities from sharing identifying information for immigration enforcement purposes without a judicial warrant.\u00a0All Michiganders should feel confident when interacting with our state government that their tax information, health information, or employment information will not be shared with law enforcement for the purposes of identifying and detaining residents.\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span>\u00a0<br \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Senate Bill 510 prohibits masked or unidentified law enforcement activity except in limited circumstances.
