Jeff Irwin, would break down financial barriers to over-the-counter oral hormonal contraceptives and emergency contraceptives. Additionally,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/mcmorrow\/2024\/09\/23\/immediate-postpartum-contraception\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">legislation introduced by Sen. Mallory McMorrow<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> would ensure more inclusive access to immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraception.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:279}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These bills build on a series of actions taken by the Democratic-led Michigan Legislature, including repealing the state\u2019s 1931 abortion ban and our<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2023\/11\/07\/reproductive-freedom\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Reproductive Health Act<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2024\/03\/14\/surrogacy\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Family Protection Act<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, to ensure Michiganders \u2014 not politicians \u2014 possess the power to determine if and when they would like to begin a family.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:256}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Michigan Senate Democrats Pass Budget Supplemental and Other Legislation to Bring More Dollars Back to Classrooms and Teachers<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Since assuming the majority, my Senate Democratic colleagues and I have remained committed to strengthening Michigan&#8217;s public education system. While our new 2025 state budget included a one-time decrease in the rates school districts pay into the Michigan Public School Employees\u2019 Retirement System (MPSERS), we recently took action to make that change permanent by passing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-SB-0911\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Senate Bill 911<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. This redirects over $600 million from MPSERS \u2014 which is currently funded at 140% \u2014 back to our schools every year, which is equivalent to about a <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">$400 per student increase statewide<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This legislation also eliminates the 3% payroll deduction that some employees contribute toward their retiree health care costs, putting more money back into the pockets of more than 100,000 hardworking educators and support staff. This bill has been returned to the House of Representatives for their consideration before it heads to the governor\u2019s desk for her signature.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Similarly, the Legislature passed a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/Bills\/Bill?ObjectName=2024-HB-5503\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">school budget supplemental bill<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> last week, investing <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">millions <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">of extra state dollars into school safety and mental health supports. This gives school districts the flexibility to determine where those funds are needed most \u2014 whether it be more school resource officers, counselors, therapists, or infrastructure upgrades.
