In fact, access to a firearm makes it five times more likely an abusive partner will kill their female victim. Moreover, up to one in three Michigan families are impacted by domestic violence. These statistics are alarming \u2014 but are reflective of a difficult reality.\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>As legislators, it is important to do our best to address such issues. That is why I am proud of our work in passing Senate Bills\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0471\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"1\">471<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"2\">472<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(zgvhsfilrecdxszsesqj5cwh))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=2023-SB-0528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"3\">528<\/a>\u00a0to strengthen\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2023\/11\/03\/survivors-of-domestic-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"4\">domestic violence protections<\/a>\u00a0in Michigan and help prevent firearm injury and death. This is a huge step forward in getting these commonsense bills past the finish line and signed into law to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of abusers.\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>As Senate Democrats continue our work as the Majority for the People, I will continue to share updates and pertinent information with you. This legislation will set long-awaited clean energy and renewable energy standards, increase energy efficiency targets and expand the role of the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC).\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span>These bills make substantive and historic progress toward a sustainable future for Michigan and lay a solid foundation for continued work to improve Michigan\u2019s energy industry and protect our air, land and water. Read more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/senatedems.com\/blog\/2023\/10\/26\/clean-energy-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"8\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><b><i>Reproductive Health Act Expands Healthcare Access\u00a0<\/i><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/b><\/span><span>Nearly 2.5 million Michigan voters showed overwhelming support for Proposal 3 in November 2022 after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. This allowed the legislature to take the historic step of overturning our state\u2019s draconian 1931 abortion ban; but there is still more to do.\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>On October 19, the Michigan Senate took steps to ensure true access to reproductive healthcare by passing the Reproductive Health Act, Senate Bills\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"9\">474<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0477\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"10\">477<\/a>. The following week, the Senate passed Senate Bill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(i1grpjodkaksrwp3oikoqcnd))\/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&amp;objectName=2023-SB-0593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"11\">593<\/a>.\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>The comprehensive package of bills will repeal medically unnecessary regulations and remove reporting requirements and administrative burdens that are not placed on any other healthcare providers. This legislation was crafted with constituents and advocates in mind \u2014 taking into account their diverse lived experiences and perspectives. While Senate Bills 475 and 593 await further action in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.house.mi.gov\/Committee\/HHEAL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"12\">House Committee on Health Policy<\/a>, I am happy to report that Senate Bills 474, 476, and 477 are on their way to the Governor\u2019s desk.\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><b>District News and Updates\u00a0<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/b><\/span><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/span><span><b><i>Coffee Hour with Rep. Glanville and I were also honored to convene an educator roundtable at Grandville Public Schools! We were pleased to hear directly from West Michigan educators about the critical importance of ongoing recruitment of diverse teachers and addressing the barriers that future teachers face when choosing this important career.<\/span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>We&#8217;re proud that this year&#8217;s state budget included record investments in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/07\/26\/whitmer-signs-legislation-to-recruit-and-retain-educators#:~:text=These%20bills%20build%20on%20the,are%20completing%20their%20student%20teaching.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"13\">teacher recruitment programs<\/a>, including tuition-free training, support for repaying student loans and stipends for student teachers. I want to thank the educators from Grandville, Wyoming and Kentwood school districts, Kent ISD, Calvin University and Grand Valley State University who shared their feedback. To help keep yourself and your community healthy, I encourage you to take advantage of the free vaccine and testing options available to you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/i><\/b><b><i>Updated COVID-19 Vaccine Protects Against New Variants<br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/i><\/b><span>The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) recommends all Michiganders 6 months and older receive the updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine which is designed to provide protection against severe COVID-19 disease from currently circulating variants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/>Most Michigan residents can still get a COVID-19 vaccine for free. For people with health insurance, most plans will cover COVID-19 vaccine at no cost to you. Michigan residents who don\u2019t have health insurance or have health plans that do not cover the cost can reach out to a health care provider or local pharmacy participating in the CDC\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/programs\/bridge\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"14\">Bridge Access Program<\/a>, their health department or visit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"15\">Vaccines.gov<\/a>\u00a0for additional information on ways to obtain a free vaccine.\u00a0<\/span><b><i><br aria-hidden=\"true\" \/><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>For more information,
