Gretchen Whitmer&#8217;s desk for signature.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Senate Bills 348 and 349 ban any practice or treatments by licensed mental health professionals that seek to change an individual\u2019s sexual orientation or gender identity. This will prevent incidents where families seeking mental health assistance for their children are unknowingly working with professionals using conversion therapy methods, methods which are demonstrated to raise the risk of suicide for LGBTQ youth. The Commission will look at ways of improving and protecting the health, safety, and well-being of Michigan\u2019s LGBTQ+ community and promoting LGBTQ+ culture, history, and economic contributions to Michigan through coordinated efforts and advocacy across state government. Additionally, the Commission will look at ways to attract potential future residents from the LGBTQ+ community by ensuring that Michigan is a safe place where its members and their families can thrive. This legislation will expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act and protect Michigan residents from facing discrimination based on wearing their natural hair or protective hairstyles, especially in workplaces and schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>Senator Sarah Anthony has been a longtime advocate of the CROWN Act \u2014 understanding the necessity of uplifting and acknowledging the cultural significance of hair, particularly in the Black community.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This is a huge step forward for Michigan and for the fight against systemic racism and discrimination in all its forms. I applaud the efforts of the Michigan legislators and activists who championed this bill.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><b><i>Voting Improvement and Election Reform Bills Pass the Senate\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-19px|auto||auto||&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/senatedems.com\/brinks\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/06\/Absentee-application.png&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; title_text=&#8221;Absentee application&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][\/et_pb_image][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_column _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; theme_builder_area=&#8221;post_content&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<p><span>Last week, the Michigan Senate voted to pass the most comprehensive and expansive voting improvements in a generation, Senate Bills <a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0367\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0367\">367<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0374\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2023-SB-0374\">374<\/a> to implement the election reforms that voters overwhelmingly passed in Proposal 2 of 2022.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i>Specifically, these bills would:\u00a0\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Implement nine consecutive days of early voting for statewide elections starting at least on the second Saturday before the election and ending the Sunday before the election;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Establish sentencing guidelines for disclosure of early voting election results;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Create a single application for voters to automatically receive absent voter ballots for all future elections;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Provide for prepaid return postage on certain election documents and signature matching\/curing requirements for absent voter ballot documents;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Expand permissible options for photo identity used in voting-related purposes;\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Require each municipality in Michigan to have at least one accessible absent voter ballot drop box and one for every 15,000 registered voters in the municipality; and\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Increase the number of active registered voters in a single election precinct from 2,999 to 5,000 active registered voters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>These bills have been thoughtfully crafted and thoroughly reviewed with local and county clerks, state election experts, and state and local officials from precincts of all sizes, both rural and urban. The passing of this legislation, sponsored by Senator Sylvia Santana, demonstrates a commitment to honoring the true history of when slavery was abolished in our country.\u202f\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>As you may know, Monday, June 19th commemorates Juneteenth, the day when federal troops arrived in\u202fGalveston, Texas\u202fin 1865 to ensure that all enslaved people were freed. The troops\u2019 arrival came a full two and a half years after\u202fthe signing of the Emancipation Proclamation and marks the day slavery was ended in all parts of the United States.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Celebrations for Juneteenth took place all over the Grand Rapids area this year, like the Justice 4 All Juneteenth Jam that I attended at Rosa Parks Circle. This year\u2019s legislature passed a resolution declaring June Pride Month in the State of Michigan \u2014 an important and symbolic action. But even more important, we were able to expand the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act to include anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ+ folks and to address barriers to public accommodations and employment. And that&#8217;s a substantive, hard-fought win that was forty years in the making. And we\u2019re not done yet; we\u2019ll keep working hard to ensure that Michigan is a place where people can be unapologetically themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019m grateful to the Grand Rapids Pride Center for their hard work and for making this community celebration possible!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HELPFUL INFORMATION<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><i>EGLE Air Quality Index\u202f\u202f<\/i>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airnow.gov\/aqi\/aqi-basics\/\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.airnow.gov\/aqi\/aqi-basics\/\">Air Quality Index (AQI)<\/a> is a color-coded way for residents to see what the levels of some types of air pollution are in their area. The higher the AQI, the worse the air quality is and the more cause for concern. Due to the recent fires in northern Michigan and Canada the past couple weeks, the AQI for particulate matter (PM) is high in many parts of Michigan and the eastern US. EPA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fire.airnow.gov\/\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/fire.airnow.gov\/\">Smoke and Fire map<\/a> can be helpful in locating fires near you and seeing how smoke is moving.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><i>Air Quality Alerts are issued through the EnviroFlash system, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enviroflash.info\/signup.cfm\" data-ogsc=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.enviroflash.info\/signup.cfm\">sign up here to receive them<\/a>. Here are some tips to keep it safe out there:\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Contain your campfire or bonfire in a pit or ring and make sure you put it out thoroughly before leaving for the night.
