This was a beautiful and solemn occasion where I had the opportunity to show my appreciation and respect for those who have stepped up for our country in uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year has been especially hard for some of our veterans, as we observed the end of the decades-long engagement in Afghanistan. My thoughts go out to all our Michigan veterans and their families, and I want to make it clear to those of you who may be struggling, that my team and I are here for you, and we are available to help in any way we can.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, please continue to look out for your friends and neighbors and be patient with one another. Which is why eliminating the \u201cTampon Tax\u201d is an issue I\u2019ve been working toward since I was a member of the House of Representatives, and last week we did it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last Friday, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2021-SB-0153\" target=\"_blank\">my bill<\/a>&nbsp;eliminating the 6% sales and use tax on feminine hygiene products. It was about time we ended this unfair tax burden, and with this new law, Michigan moves toward a fairer tax structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Mic\"><strong>Michigan Launches Child Care Stabilization Grant<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Childcare providers are the backbone of our economy. Working families have been faced with a major crisis during this pandemic, which has made the existing long-term childcare crisis, even more complicated. That\u2019s why we\u2019re celebrating the recent launch of the Child Care Stabilization Grant that will distribute $350 million in grants to give every full-time childcare professional a $1,000 bonus and keep childcare programs open and serving kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Licensed childcare providers are eligible\u202fto apply\u202fand should visit\u202f<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/mde\/0,4615,7-140-63533_63534---,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan.gov\/childcare<\/a>\u202fto review frequently asked questions and apply.\u202fThese funds can be used to cover personnel costs, rent or mortgage, insurance, facility improvements, supplies related to COVID-19, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"COV\"><strong>COVID-19 Vaccine Town Halls<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, Nov. 18 at noon, the State of Michigan will host a virtual town hall about the COVID-19 vaccine through Facebook Live on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/michiganhhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MDHHS Facebook page<\/a>. Residents will have the opportunity to hear about the safety, efficacy, and importance of the COVID-19 vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any questions that cannot be answered during the town hall due to time constraints will be reviewed and added to the State of Michigan COVID-19 vaccine frequently asked questions webpage available at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/coronavirus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98178_103214-549767--,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">More information on the town hall, as well as links to previous town halls, can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vol\"><strong>Volunteers Needed for Kent County Income Tax Assistance<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout our community, the Kent County Tax Credit Coalition (KCTCC) helps working individuals and families achieve economic success through free tax services. This couldn\u2019t happen without volunteers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteers can serve as Intake Specialists, Tax Preparers, or Quality Reviewers (for returning volunteers only) and are asked to commit to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Training and completion of certification tests (2\u201312 hours, depending upon volunteer experience and role).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A minimum of four hours per week from February through early April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While they encourage volunteers to train in-person, they also offer online training. Join their team of more than 200 volunteers that completed more than 6,000 federal, state, and local returns last year \uf0berefunding $5 million into the hands of those that need it most to pay overdue bills, make car repairs, save for the future, and bolster the local economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=http:\/\/hwmuw.org\/kctcc\" target=\"_blank\">hwmuw.org\/kctcc<\/a>&nbsp;for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vir\"><strong>Virtual Baby Fair<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you a new or expecting parent? Learn about resources available to you, important information, and ask questions to experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are the dates and times of upcoming virtual baby fairs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Monday, Dec. 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wednesday, Dec. 8 from 9 to 11 a.m.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wednesday, Dec. 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.research.net\/r\/MDHHSVirtualBabyFair_Winter2021\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to register online through the MDHHS website for these events<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sec\"><strong>Secretary of State Offices Now Offering Evening Hours on Wednesdays<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Nov. 3, Secretary of State offices are now open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays to provide services to residents who cannot visit offices during traditional business hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visits during Wednesday evening hours are now available for booking at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michigan.gov\/SOS<\/a>. Wednesday hours will now be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Central Time).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The department releases thousands of office visits twice per day, every business day for residents to book online at&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/action.meicigama.com\/actionctrl\/click\/618c3c3dd768d2514d8b45d9\/600b4364d768d24a2c8b4567?url=https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\" target=\"_blank\">Michigan.gov\/SOS<\/a>&nbsp;or by calling 888-SOS-MICH.
