Yesterday, the Michigan Senate passed Senate Bills 111-114, a bill package to help better detect and address cases of elder abuse and exploitation. Championed by Senator Veronica Klinefelt, this legislation strengthens penalties for elder abuse and financial exploitation offenses while also working to expand prevention efforts. Earlier this week, Heart of West Michigan United Way hosted a panel of legislators to speak directly to the challenges nonprofit leaders are facing. The concerns that were shared — about grants cancelled, funding denied, and proposed cuts to our most basic social safety net — are being felt deeply across our community.
