Smoky the firehouse dog and I were just thrilled to help break ground at the Grand Rapids Fire Department’s new state of the art training facility! I am so proud to have helped secure funding for this project, and I'm always working in Lansing to bring home more investments that support our first responders. 🚒

As the only facility of its class in Michigan, our first responders will soon have 10,000 square feet to train both indoors and outdoors in live fire situations. They’ll learn technical and emergency rescue skills that will help prepare them to save lives. Students from our universities and career training programs will be exposed to pathways to an amazing career. In short, this will be a crown jewel of training for the whole Midwest. Smoky approves!

Last week, I met with advocates for public transportation in my district. They told important stories about the difference quality public transit has made for them. Whether someone doesn’t drive because of a disability, a limited budget, or a personal choice — access to reliable and safe transportation is a critical part of keeping our economy strong and our quality of life high in Michigan. As we continue to negotiate a state budget, I'll keep fighting to protect vital public transit funding that keeps our communities connected and thriving. ... See MoreSee Less

Kids have been back in school here in Grand Rapids for over two weeks now — and for lots of families, the high cost of school supplies means that students don’t have all that they need.

I'm so grateful to the AT&T Foundation for their generous donation of backpacks filled with school supplies that I got to deliver to the Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Academy on Grand Rapids’ SE side. Our partners at Kent School Services Network - KSSN are doing incredible work there (and in so many schools!) to help connect kids to the resources they need to thrive. I'll continue fighting in Lansing to ensure every school has access to the tools and funding they need to give our kids a quality education.
