LANSING – Sen. Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) has issued the following statement regarding the decision by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel to sue PFAS manufacturing companies:
“Michigan must send a clear message that corporations be held accountable for irresponsible environmental practices, and today’s announcement is a positive step toward justice for those who have been impacted by these hazardous chemicals.
“We must also have a larger conversation about the need for regulatory reform when it comes to chemicals such as PFAS and the consequences of contamination. Current policy promotes a culture of ‘do now, seek forgiveness later,’ when we should be more proactive about protecting our environment and public health from the risks associated with potential contaminants.”
Sen. Brinks has been a vocal advocate for stricter regulations that protect the environment, public health and critical sources of drinking water from toxic contamination.
Sen. Brinks represents the 29th Senate District that includes the cities of East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids and Lowell, as well as the townships of Ada, Bowne, Caledonia, Cascade, Grand Rapids and Lowell.
