(<\/span>September 27<\/span>, 2023)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2014<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Today,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Sen<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Rosemary<\/span>\u00a0Bayer<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(D-West\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bloomfield)<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>introduced legislation, Senate Bill<\/span>\u00a0543<\/span>, that would\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>remove<\/span>\u00a0language and references\u00a0<\/span><\/span>pertaining to<\/span>\u00a0pyrolysis and gasification from Part 115 of the Michigan Recycling Code \u2014 included in legislation passed in 2022.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Currently, the existing language codifies into Michigan Law processes that are unproven to be effective at reducing or “recycling” plastic.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am proud to bring forth <\/span>policies\u00a0<\/span>that will help\u00a0<\/span>improve our state\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>environmental<\/span>\u00a0quality and\u00a0<\/span>protect<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the health and well-being of Michigan residents,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0said Sen.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bayer<\/span><\/span><\/strong>. \u201cTh<\/span>is amendment\u00a0<\/span>is the first step in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>address<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0the issue\u00a0<\/span>as well as the many\u00a0<\/span>concerns<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>residents have. It is important that our state recognizes\u00a0<\/span>the importance of\u00a0<\/span>safeguarding\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>environment and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>proceeds<\/span>\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span>ac<\/span>t<\/span>\u00a0with caution and<\/span>\u00a0a sense of<\/span>\u00a0urgency<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Pyrolysis and gasification<\/span>\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0commonly used to convert\u00a0<\/span>plastic into fuel, which<\/span>\u00a0is then<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>release<\/span>d as<\/span>\u00a0greenhouse gases. Therefore<\/span>, it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>poses<\/span>\u00a0a threat to\u00a0<\/span>our environment by\u00a0<\/span>aiding in\u00a0<\/span>air\u00a0<\/span>pollution<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Th<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0amendatory language<\/span>, along with the<\/span>\u00a0continued research\u00a0<\/span>conducted by<\/span>\u00a0scientific experts,\u00a0<\/span>will allow these processes to be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>los<\/span>el<\/span>y<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>m<\/span>o<\/span>nit<\/span>or<\/span>e<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0without\u00a0<\/span>jeopardizing the health of<\/span>\u00a0Michiganders<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
