BACKGROUND:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Sen. Bayer had her own deadly gun violence experience when she was in eighth grade,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in 2021,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a mass shooting at the high school<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>her<\/span>\u00a0hometown of Oxford<\/span>, Michigan, killed four people and injured seven others.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
Sen. Bayer\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is the<\/span>\u00a0cochair of the bicameral Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention Caucus<\/span>\u00a0and has been the Senate\u2019s lead on gun violence pr<\/span>e<\/span>vention legislation<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>With the deadly shooting at Michigan State University on Feb. 13, Sen. Bayer and her legislative colleagues worked quickly to introduce legislation to tackle gun violence and help prevent these tragedies from happening.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span><\/span>11-bill\u00a0<\/span><\/span>package\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that w<\/span>ill be<\/span>\u00a0introduced<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0both<\/span>\u00a0the House and Senate will<\/span>\u00a0requir<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0safe storage of firearms, background checks for all firearms\u2014not just handguns, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>establish Extreme Risk Protective Orders\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that will allow\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0court\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>take\u00a0<\/span><\/span>temporary possession of a firearm if the court finds that an individual is at risk of harming themselves or others.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n
