This now federally recognized holiday commemorates when General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 and affirmed the end of slavery in all U.S. states. This was more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">I had the opportunity to participate in Pontiac\u2019s first Juneteenth Parade. Thank you State Representative Brenda Carter for organizing this important event! The pediatric vaccine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-moderna-and-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccines-children\">which received emergency use authorization for this age group from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/a>, was recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on June 18, 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">MDHHS is recommending providers begin vaccinating children ages 6 months and up as soon as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.modernatx.com\/news\/news-details\/2022\/Moderna-Receives-FDA-Authorization-for-Emergency-Use-of-Its-COVID-19-Vaccine-for-Children-6-Months-of-Age-and-Older\/default.aspx\">Moderna series<\/a> is two doses given 28 days (about 4 weeks) apart for ages 6 months through 5 years. For children 6 months of age through 4 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-receives-fda-emergency-use\">Pfizer series<\/a> is three doses, the first two given three weeks apart and the third dose administered at least eight weeks after the second dose. For ages 5 and older, the Pfizer series is two doses given 21 days (about 3 weeks) apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">MDHHS recommends all eligible children get vaccinated and stay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/coronavirus\/Folder2\/C OVID-19_Vaccination_Schedule_2nd_Booster_v3.pdf\">up to date on vaccines<\/a> even if they have previously had COVID-19. Children younger than 5 can receive vaccine from a primary care provider, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malph.org\/resources\/directory\">local health department<\/a> or federally qualified health center. Some pharmacies will vaccinate people ages 3 and up. Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/\">Vaccines.gov<\/a> for nearby vaccine locations \u2014 age specific information will soon be available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"><b>MDHHS OFFERS TIPS AND TRICKS TO STAY HEALTHY DURING HEAT WAVES\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">As summer approaches later this month, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is urging Michigan residents to take steps to protect themselves from risks related to hot weather.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">As daily temperatures rise above 80 degrees, emergency department visits for heat-related illness tend to increase. This is often more likely early in the summer season as people are not yet used to high temperatures and are not taking the necessary precautions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">To prevent complications from the heat, residents are encouraged to:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Drink more fluids and avoid liquids with large amounts of sugar or alcohol.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Limit outdoor activities to when it is coolest in the morning and evening.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Spend time indoors with air conditioning.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Wear sunscreen, as sunburn affects a body\u2019s ability to cool down.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Check on elderly neighbors and relatives to determine if they need assistance.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">For those without access to air conditioning, text or call Michigan 2-1-1 or contact your local health department to find out if there is a cooling center nearby. You can also spend some time at an air-conditioned store, shopping mall or other public building \u2014 even a few hours spent in an air-conditioned environment can help.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">In addition to staying hydrated and out of the sun, residents are reminded to never leave children or pets alone in a car even with windows cracked. Temperatures inside a car can easily be double the temperature outside. Because a child\u2019s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult, they are more susceptible to heatstroke.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are both forms of heat-related illness. Signs of heat-related illness vary but may include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, fainting, extremely high body temperature (above 103\u00b0F), and\/or tiredness. It\u2019s important to stay hydrated and out of the sun as much as possible during days when temperatures are particularly high.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">You can find cooling centers throughout Oakland County by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oakgov.com\/emergency-management\/need-to-know\/safety\/Pages\/Cooling-Centers.aspx\">visiting the county\u2019s website<\/a>. It\u2019s important to take care of our bodies during the summer months and local cooling centers are a great resource to utilize if you\u2019re in need of a cool space to relax.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"><b>MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS STAY SAFE ONLINE<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Are your children safe while online? Michigan families, especially minors, are becoming inundated with advertisements from alcohol, tobacco, pornography, illegal drugs, and gambling marketers through different internet and cell phone inboxes. Thankfully, the State of Michigan offers a free program to stop adult advertisements from reaching emails, text messages, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The Michigan Child Protection Registry is a free, do-not-contact service for Michigan\u2019s families and can be located at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.protectmichild.com\/\">ProtectMIChild.com<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">I encourage you to sign your entire family up for the Registry and inform your friends and colleagues about how it can also protect their children and families from unwanted adult advertising. This now federally recognized holiday commemorates when General Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 and affirmed the end of slavery in all U.S. states. The pediatric vaccine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-moderna-and-pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccines-children\">which received emergency use authorization for this age group from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/a>, was recommended by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on June 18, 2022.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">MDHHS is recommending providers begin vaccinating children ages 6 months and up as soon as possible.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p><p><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.modernatx.com\/news\/news-details\/2022\/Moderna-Receives-FDA-Authorization-for-Emergency-Use-of-Its-COVID-19-Vaccine-for-Children-6-Months-of-Age-and-Older\/default.aspx\">Moderna series<\/a> is two doses given 28 days (about 4 weeks) apart for ages 6 months through 5 years. For children 6 months of age through 4 years.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-biontech-covid-19-vaccine-receives-fda-emergency-use\">Pfizer series<\/a> is three doses, the first two given three weeks apart and the third dose administered at least eight weeks after the second dose. For ages 5 and older, the Pfizer series is two doses given 21 days (about 3 weeks) apart.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">MDHHS recommends all eligible children get vaccinated and stay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/coronavirus\/Folder2\/C\nOVID-19_Vaccination_Schedule_2nd_Booster_v3.pdf\">up to date on vaccines<\/a> even if they have previously had COVID-19. Children younger than 5 can receive vaccine from a primary care provider, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malph.org\/resources\/directory\">local health department<\/a> or federally qualified health center. Some pharmacies will vaccinate people ages 3 and up. Visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/\">Vaccines.gov<\/a> for nearby vaccine locations \u2014 age specific information will soon be available.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\"><br><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\"><b>MDHHS OFFERS TIPS AND TRICKS TO STAY HEALTHY DURING HEAT WAVES&nbsp;<\/b><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">As summer approaches later this month, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is urging Michigan residents to take steps to protect themselves from risks related to hot weather.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">As daily temperatures rise above 80 degrees, emergency department visits for heat-related illness tend to increase. This is often more likely early in the summer season as people are not yet used to high temperatures and are not taking the necessary precautions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">To prevent complications from the heat, residents are encouraged to:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Drink more fluids and avoid liquids with large amounts of sugar or alcohol.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Limit outdoor activities to when it is coolest in the morning and evening.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Spend time indoors with air conditioning.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Wear sunscreen, as sunburn affects a body\u2019s ability to cool down.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Check on elderly neighbors and relatives to determine if they need assistance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">For those without access to air conditioning, text or call Michigan 2-1-1 or contact your local health department to find out if there is a cooling center nearby. You can also spend some time at an air-conditioned store, shopping mall or other public building \u2014 even a few hours spent in an air-conditioned environment can help.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">In addition to staying hydrated and out of the sun, residents are reminded to never leave children or pets alone in a car even with windows cracked. Temperatures inside a car can easily be double the temperature outside. Because a child\u2019s body heats up three to five times faster than an adult, they are more susceptible to heatstroke.&nbsp;<\/span><br><\/p><p><span style=\"background-color: transparent\">Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are both forms of heat-related illness. Signs of heat-related illness vary but may include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, fainting, extremely high body temperature (above 103\u00b0F), and\/or tiredness.
