They have been closed for more than a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents across Michigan can begin scheduling appointments online. Each appointment is offered in 15-minute intervals and can be scheduled up to a week in advance. Customers should bring their driver&#8217;s license or photo ID and any other documents pertinent to their claim.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being late for an appointment can cause it to be rescheduled. The UIA anticipates serving 900 customers a day through the in-person option.&nbsp;<strong>Walk-ins will not be accepted.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DELTA DENTAL SCHOLARSHIP NEWS&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Delta Dental Foundation (DDF) has established a $25,000 Diversity Dental Student Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to two students from systemically underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds entering dental school in Michigan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DDF recognizes that diversifying the dental field is one way to tackle oral health disparities in health care. Right now, fewer than 10% of licensed dentists are Black, Hispanic or Indigenous. Financial concerns are one reason many prospective dental students decide not to pursue a career as a dentist. The hope is that by providing upfront financial support, the Diversity Dental Student Scholarship will encourage more students to enter dental school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incoming students at both dental schools in Michigan, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, are eligible to apply for the scholarship.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can learn more at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deltadentalmi.com\/giving-back\/Delta-Dental-Foundation\/Scholarships-Awards\">DeltaDentalMI.com\/Awards<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MI TREASURY RESOURCES FOR SMALL BUSINESSES&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Michigan Department of Treasury has put together a series of online educational events specifically for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. The Treasury\u2019s free educational events provide an opportunity to learn about important tax processing and tax compliance topics as well as Treasury updates. Their goal through this outreach program is to enhance communication, foster a culture of taxpayer service, and identify continuous improvement projects through your feedback.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A webinar series for nonprofits that covers specific Michigan sales and use tax laws for qualifying nonprofit entities and filing and payment considerations (featuring a live demonstration).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A tax and wage series for small businesses by the Michigan Department of Treasury partnering with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and the United States Department of Labor (DOL) to deep-dive on employer-focused laws, regulations, process guidance, and resources, and more!&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2021 Treasury Outreach calendar of events is continually updated at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/treasury\/0,4679,7-121-1755_81307---,00.html\">Michigan.gov\/TreasuryOutreach<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CHILD TAX CREDIT PAYMENTS TO BEGIN JULY 15&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, June 21, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged parents to file\u202fa\u202ffederal income tax return, if they haven\u2019t yet done so,\u202for use\u202fthe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/child-tax-credit-non-filer-sign-up-tool\">Non-filer Sign-up Tool<\/a>in order to\u202fbe eligible\u202ffor\u202ffederal Child Tax Credit\u202fpayments.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/house-bill\/1319\">The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021<\/a>&nbsp;increased the\u202ffederal\u202fChild Tax Credit\u202fto $3,600 per year for children under 6 years old and $3,000 per year for children 6\u201317 years old.\u202fThe tax credit\u202fwill be issued as a monthly payment and\u202fwill not\u202fcount as additional income that could affect\u202fa family\u2019s\u202feligibility for public assistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Families meeting the guidelines will receive an Internal Revenue Service-issued check or direct deposit on July 15, August\u202f13, September 15, October 15, November 15, and December 15. The new maximum credit is available to taxpayers with a modified Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) of:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$75,000 or less for singles,&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$112,500 or less for a single parent, also called (head of household), and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$150,000 or less for married couples filing a joint return and qualified widows and widowers.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Low-income families with children are eligible for this crucial tax relief \u2013 including those who have not made enough money to be required to file taxes. If a couple makes under $24,800, a head of household makes under $18,650, or\u202fa single filer makes under $12,400, and they have not filed their taxes, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/credits-deductions\/child-tax-credit-non-filer-sign-up-tool\">Non-filer Sign-up Tool<\/a>&nbsp;can be used to sign up for the federal Child Tax Credit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5743308460b5e922a25a6dc7\/t\/600f2123fdfa730101a4426a\/1611604260458\/Poverty-Reduction-Analysis-American-Family-Act-CPSP-2020.pdf\">Recent estimates from Columbia University\u2019s Center on Poverty &amp; Social Policy\u202f<\/a>&nbsp;find that this expanded Child Tax Credit will reduce child poverty by 45% overall, by 52% among Black children, by 62% among Native American children, and effectively eliminate the most extreme forms of child poverty in America.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find more information at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/child-tax-credit\/\">ChildTaxCredit.gov<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CHANGES TO COVID RESTRICTIONS AS OF JUNE 22&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Thursday, June 17, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that effective June 22, capacity in both indoor and outdoor settings would increase to 100% and the state would no longer require residents to wear a face mask.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly five million Michiganders ages 16 and older have received their first vaccine dose, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. And, according to data from the Michigan Care Improvement Registry, half of Michigan residents have completed their vaccination and more than 60% have gotten their first shots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Case rates, percent positivity, and hospitalizations have all plummeted over the past several weeks. Currently, Michigan is experiencing 24.3 cases per million and has recorded a 1.9% positivity rate over the last seven days.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some orders will remain in effect to protect vulnerable populations in corrections, long-term care, and agriculture. Public health measures will continue for reporting requirements and COVID testing to make sure areas where community spread is high are identified, kids are safe in school, and free COVID-19 tests are available. Guidance for keeping children and staff safe in schools will be released soon.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine and where to find the nearest vaccination site, visit\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/coronavirus\/0,9753,7-406-98178_103214---,00.html\">Michigan.gov\/COVIDvaccine<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccines.gov\/\">VaccineFinder.org<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SENATE PASSES NEARLY $4.4B IN K-12 SCHOOL FUNDING&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Minority Vice-Chair of the Senate K-12 Appropriations Sub-Committee, I am proud to announce that last week, after months of negotiations, the Michigan Senate passed a $4.38 billion coronavirus relief funding bill for K-12 schools in Michigan.&nbsp;\u202fOur students cannot afford to wait any longer!\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2021-HB-4421\">House Bill 4421<\/a>, the approved legislation, appropriates the entirety of the American Rescue Plan stimulus and recovery money provided to Michigan\u2019s School Aid Fund. Most of the money in the bill \u2014 $3.35 billion \u2014 is from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief III, with another $840.7 million in funds that have not yet been appropriated, but that are also included for distribution in school districts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other important funding priorities include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>$92 million from Emergency Assistance to Nonpublic Schools funding, and&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$86.8 million from the Governor\u2019s Emergency Education Relief funding for nonpublic schools.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Provisions were also made in the legislation that relate to summer school, as well as before- and after-school programs. Michigan students will now be allowed to enroll in summer programs offered in any district, not just their local district. School districts will also be able to use local assessments to make determinations of children with the greatest needs along with benchmark data for summer programming. The bill also removes the requirement that summer programs take place in-person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES RECORD INVESTMENT IN CHILDCARE&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, June 14, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/attachments\/MIEOG\/2021\/06\/14\/file_attachments\/1852633\/Child%20Care%20Federal%20Funds%20Briefing%20Document.pdf\">announced a $1.4 billion investment in federal childcare funding<\/a>&nbsp;to expand access to high-quality childcare, make it more affordable, and support childcare professionals as part of the administration\u2019s Economic Jumpstart Investment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights include:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Making childcare more affordable for families.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase income eligibility from 150% of the federal poverty level (FPL), $39,300 annually for a family of four, to 200% or $53,000 annually for a family of four from August 1, 2021 \u2013 September 30, 2023, making low or no-cost childcare available to an estimated 150,000 more children. Thereafter, income eligibility permanently increases to 160% FPL, $41,920 annually for a family of four.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increase access to the childcare subsidy for student parents enrolled in Michigan Reconnect and Futures for Frontliners for a 12-month period. Individual student parents will leave the program per the exit requirements.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Supporting early childhood educators.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Offer premium pay for childcare professionals with stipends paid quarterly from July 2021 \u2013 September 2022.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintain mental health supports provided by infant and early childhood mental health consultants for children enrolled in childcare.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Stabilizing childcare businesses.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Raise childcare subsidy rates by 20% for providers to move closer to the market rate for childcare.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provide business stimulus grants to all childcare providers to help them remain open and serving Michigan families.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Expanding access to childcare.&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide grants to new and expanding sites in communities without adequate childcare.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>June 25, 2021 Friends,&nbsp; As summer begins, we are fortunate that our collective efforts are paying off, allowing us to move forward in a new, post-pandemic normal.
